Young woman from Madrid, signed, annotated and dated 'P.Rink./1889 Madrid' (lower right), oil on canvas, 47,5x37,5 cm, Provenance:-Acquired by Mr Lensvelt around 1900, thence by descent to the present owner, The painting was acquired by Mr Pieter Lensvelt, who had been the director of the renowned establishment Lensvelt Nicola in The Hague since 1895. This celebrated bakery was famous for its bread, cakes, and a popular tearoom that attracted the city’s elite. Located at 27-29 Venestraat, the shop was housed in a newly designed building commissioned by the firm and crafted by architect Johannes Mutters Jr.Please compare this lot to a portrait by the artist with a similar subject, ‘Een Madrileense’ (1889), which was in the private collection of Hendrik Willem Mesdag since 1892, and now at Museum De Mesdag Collectie (inv. no. hwm0276).

Das Leben und Werk des Malers Paulus Philippus „Paul" Rink ist nur wenig bekannt. Dies hängt auch mit seinem frühen Tod, er starb 41-jährig, zusammen. Zeichenunterricht genoss Rink an der Akademie Den Haag. Von 1882 bis 1886 besuchte er die Akademie der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen. Einer seiner Mitstudenten war Vincent van Gogh, welcher im Herbst 1886 in einem Brief aus Paris an seinen Klassenkameraden Horace Mann Livens diesen auffordert: „Schreib mir, auf alle Fälle erwähne mich bei Allan, Briët, Rink, Durand,...". Rink brach nach seinem Studium 1886 zu einer dreijährigen Studienreise durch Nordafrika, Italien und Spanien auf. In dieser Zeit (1887) erhielt er den Goldenen Ehrenpfennig des holländischen Prix de Rome für sein mythologisches Gemälde „Odysseus und Nausikaa". Aus dem Süden brachte der junge Künstler Licht durchflutete Studien und Bilder , wie das hier angebotene Gemälde „Gasse in Sevilla" aus dem Jahr 1889 zurück . Gegen Abend, ein schemenhaftes, dem Betrachter den Rücken zuwendendes Paar ist im Begriff um die Ecke einer mit Weiss getünchten und Blumen geschmückten Häusern gesäumten Altstadtgasse zu entschwinden.

A LITTLE COWHERDESS IN A MEADOW NEAR ZALK 61 by 91 cm. signed and dated 10/1899 l.r.; signed and inscribed Amsterdam on the reverse oil on canvas NOTE Paul Rink's work can be situated in the proximity of the "Tachtigers" movement, the painters, poets and writers who were active between the Hague School period and the Symbolists. He was a contemporary of Tholen, Karsen, Verster and Witsen, all of whom survived him as he passed away when he was only 41. Rink was very much a plein-air painter, with a preference for light and warm colours. "Rink's aim has always been to express "the essence of life", wrote art critic N.H. Wolf in 1903. "He shied away from a superficial treatment of his subjects". He was very successful in his days, rewarded with the Prix de Rome in 1887 and commissioned to decorate the Royal Train in 1903. The current lot is a beautiful example of his plein-air skills combined with a thorough understanding of character. The girl in the field is earthy and dreamy at once, standing in the fields of the idyllic village of Zalk near the river Ijssel. The subtle play of light and warm colours show the craftsmanship of a true artist, whose early demise belied his full capability as a painter.
