    Rembrandt Harmensz Van Rinjn (1606-1669) - Etching - Shoulder length portrait of Samuel Menasseh ben Israel, 5.5ins x 4.25ins, signed in plate and dated 1636 (thought to be third state of four mid to late 17th Century impression), in wide ebonised and moulded frame and glazed Note : Samuel Menasseh ben Israel was born in 1604, he was a neighbour of Rembrandt in Breestraat and the Rabbi of a nearby synagogue. He commissioned Rembrandt to do the illustrations for his book "La Piedra Gloriosa de la Estatua de Nebuchadnesar" published in Amsterdam 1655. Samuel Menasseh ben Israel was sent on a mission to Cromwell in England and died on his return to Middelburg in 1657. The Etching is listed in catalogues by Bartsch No. 269, Heine No. 146, Barnard & Bjorklund No. 36-c Provenance : Purchased from Harrods Fine Art, 14th June 1976
