    • Wilhelm Rikkers (1812-1873), Oil on Wood, The Cobbler, c. 1850
      May. 18, 2015

Wilhelm Rikkers (1812-1873), Oil on Wood, The Cobbler, c. 1850

      Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Oil on panel Netherlands, around 1850 Wilhelm Rikkers (1812-1873) – Dutch painter Signed and inscribed upper right ‘WRikkers. fec.’ Verso fitted with a handwritten and a typographic label Dimensions: 38.5 x 30 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Wilhelm Rikkers was a portrait and interior painter, active in Rotterdam; his works fetch up to €8,000 at international auctions The present painting depicts a charming interior by Wilhelm Rikkers. The room is only gently illuminated through the opened window on the upper left and reveals a cobbler at work. It seems as if the eyes would first have to get used to the diffuse light, because the details of the depiction only gradually begin to unveil. Accordingly, the composition surprises with the many tools presented in the shadow of the workbench and also with the bottles on the shelf above, whose surfaces reflect the light. The painting is signed and inscribed upper right ‘WRikkers. fec.’. The panel is affected by light marks where the frame has rubbed. The painting is however in good overall condition considering the age. The panel measures 38.5 x 30 cm. The frame only shows small traces of age and use and measures 57 x 50 cm. Wilhelm Rikkers (1812-1873) Rikkers was born in Amsterdam. He was a student of the Belgian artist Ferdinand de Braekeleer (1792-1883) at the time around 1835/40. He specialized in portrait and interior painting and was active in Rotterdam. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
