          Est: €1,500 - €1,600

French school of the 19th century. After LISIPO (Sicyon, Peloponnese, ca. 390 BC - ca. 318 BC). Black blued bronze. A copy of the same characteristics but larger and made of lead by Francesco Righetti (1749-1819) is preserved in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam; another copy made of marble is preserved in the Capitoline Museums. Both sculptures are based on the marble statue made by Lysippus (ca. 370 - 305 BC), one of the great artists of post-classical Greek sculpture. Measurements: 23 cm. The original sculpture of Cupid drawing his bow was made by Lysippus during the second half of the 4th century BC for the renowned sanctuary of the god in Thespias, where Eros was by far the greatest divinity of the city. This work was made in bronze and was later copied in marble in Roman times, which is why it has survived to the present day. Formally, the statue of Lysippus represented an Eros at the limit of the childish age, in a moment of transit or beginning of adolescence, as a neoteric country. The treatment of the hair and the softness of the sculpture responds to the candid mode of representation of the god throughout history. Francesco Righetti specialized in the realization of bronze or lead copies of famous sculptures of classical antiquity.

          Jun. 07, 2024

GRAND TOUR RIGHETTI WORKSHOP LAOCOON BRONZE GROUP 1811

          Est: $4,000 - $8,000

Laocoon and His Sons Attacked by Serpents 1811 A fine bronze group in dark brown patina with the inscription FR. RIGHETTI. ET. FIL. FEC ROM 1811 in the casting along one side. This particular mark differs from other examples by Francesco Righetti (1749-1819). Many have similar markings, like the Laocoon grouping from around 1815 signed FRANC.RIGHETTI.ET.ALOYS.FIL.ROMA.FUNDE.CAM.FEC. for Francesco and his son Luigi. It was sold at Christies in London for GBP 16,100 in 2009. Other examples include some aspects of the lettering referred to here, but no record of a work signed by Righetti with these exact same markings was found. The famous tale of Laocoon and His Sons originates with ancient Greek and Roman mythology. The story is probably best told by the near life size ancient marble sculpture that depicts the agony of the Trojan priest Laocoon and His Sons as they are entwined and killed by serpents sent by gods angered over the priest's warning, ' Beware of Greeks Bearing Gifts.' The original sculpture was rediscovered and excavated in 1506 and is now in the Vatican Museums. Francesco Righetti was one of the most prolific sculptors in Rome in the late 18th early 19th centuries. He executed large-scale projects for popes and monarchs, but is probably best remembered for his small bronze statuettes after famous antiquities such as this. After a time, his son Luigi becoming his assistant at the foundry and the inscription on this example speaks to that if the following is correctly translated from the lettering along the base: FR. RIGHETTI referring to the founder sculptor Francesco Righetti. ET. FIL. for et filius translating to ''and son.'' FEC for fecit, a Latin term meaning ''made by.'' ROM 1811: indicating that it was made in Rome in the year 1811. Measures 15 x 11 x 5 inches. The Borghese Gladiator

          Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Bronze figure with slightly mottled, shimmering patina. The original, a life-size Greek marble sculpture, is now in the collection of the Louvre in Paris. It dates from the first century BC, was found completely broken at the beginning of the 17th century and restored for the collection of Cardinal Scipio Borghese, after whom the figure is named. The first copies of the impressive sculpture were made as early as the 17th century. The bronze caster Francesco Righetti studied under the famous Luigi Valadier (1726 - 1785), who also had already produced antique replicas. In 1781 Righetti received his first known major commission: 12 full-size lead casts of famous statues from the English banker Henry Hope for his country house in Welgelegen near Haarlem (7 are still in situ). The statues chosen, painted white to resemble marble, were mainly classical works such as Venus de' Medici and Apollino (both Florence, Uffizi Gallery), but also some more recent statues such as Giambologna's Mercury (version, Florence, Bargello) and François Duquesnoy's Saint Susanna (Rome, Santa Maria di Loreto). Thieme/Becker mention above all the later casts after Canova. Enthusiasm for ancient sculpture grew throughout the 18th century. Copies of the gladiator adorned palace gardens all over Europe. Righetti produced these scaled-down casts until the Napoleonic period - the example presented here is one of his earliest.

PAAR SELTENE, FRÜHE FURIETTI-KENTAUREN, 1791 Höhe: 37 cm. Breite: 26 cm. Bzw. Höhe: 35 cm. Breite: 23 cm. Sockel: je 9,5 x 23 cm. Jeweils auf Bronzeplinthe mit griechischer Randaufschrift, Signatur und Datierung „F. RIGHETTI. A.R.

          Est: €4,500 - €6,500

Francesco Righetti (1738-1819)-attributed, Pair of bronze sculptures of the Furietti Centaurs, after the ancient, bronze cast, hand finished, with original patina, on wooden ebonised basis with red marble plinths. A pair. The Furietti Centaurs (known as the Old Centaur and Young Centaur, or Older Centaur and Younger Centaur, when being treated separately) are a pair of Hellenistic or Roman grey-black marble sculptures of centaurs based on Hellenistic models. One is a mature, bearded centaur, with a pained expression, and the other is a young smiling centaur with his arm raised. The amorini are missing that once rode the backs of these centaurs, which are the outstanding examples of a group of sculptures varying the motif. The strongly contrasted moods were intended to remind the Roman viewer of the soul troubled in pain with love or uplifted in joy, themes of Plato's Phaedrus and Hellenistic poetry. The sculptures were found together at Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli by Monsignor Giuseppe Alessandro Furietti in December 1736.
