JOHN FRANCIS RIGAUD (BRITISH 1742-1810)SIR PHILIP SIDNEY AFTER HIS WOUNDING AT THE BATTLE OF ZUTPHEN, 1586Oil on canvasSigned and indistinctly dated `179*' (lower centre)214 x 161.5cm (84¼ x 63½ in.)The English poet, courtier and soldier Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) assisted the Protestant cause in the Dutch war against the Catholic Spanish. He was mortally wounded after the Battle of Zutphen, where he would die at the age of 31. An attendant is seen dressing the wound to his left thigh and had reputedly removed his thigh armour after noticing that one of his men was not fully armoured and did not think it right to be better armoured than any of his men.
