        E. RIEPENHAUSEN (*1765) after DÜRER (*1471), The little crucifixion, Copper engraving

        Est: €300 - €400

Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen (1765 Göttingen - 1840 ibid.) after Albrecht Dürer (1471 Nuremberg - 1528 ibid.): The small crucifixion, the so-called sword button of Emperor Maximilian I, 18th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Date: 18th century Description: Mutual copy. The original of this copy is considered a rarity. Probably engraved in a gold plate, it was printed extremely rarely and still occupies researchers with the question of its function. Both its function as a sword or ornamental button and as an emperor's hat-agraffe have already been discussed (cf. Schoch 2001, p. 224f). A striking feature of this very good copy are the letters of the plaque "INRI", which are not printed upside down as in the original. In addition, the ends of the crossbar of the cross appear angular rather than round. Keywords: Passion, Jesus Christ, Passion, Bible, Figures, Judaism, Crucifixion, 18th century, Classicism, Religious, Germany, Size: Paper: 13,1 cm x 11,7 cm (5,2 x 4,6 in), Plate: 9,5 cm x 9,2 cm (3,7 x 3,6 in)

Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen (1765 Göttingen - 1840 ibid.), "Malesherbes in prison and the old man", 18th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Signed "Schubert d. R." and inscribed "Malesherbes im Gefängnis und der Greis" below the image in the printing plate. Date: 18th century Description: mounted on blue paper. Miniaturised scene showing the French statesman and minister Chrétien-Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (1721 Paris - 1794 ibid.) with a bent old man in a prison with a vaulted Gothic ceiling. Perhaps it is an illustration of a prison visit by Malesherbes to the incarcerated Ludwix XVI, the last king of France of the Ancien Régime, whom the jurist defended after his fall in the French Revolution. Keywords: Prison, 18th century, Classicism, Fashion, France, Size: 11,3 cm x 6,3 cm Condition: Good Condition. Still in good condition. The entire sheet shows waviness as well as faint discolourations. Sporadic damage to the paper surface.
