    Est: £5,000 - £7,000

Edward Ridley (1883-1946) The Labourer Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1912 lower left 90cm x 90cm Exhibited: Royal Academy, London, 1913, No. 24 Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Spring Exhibition, 1920, No. 330 (priced ú50) Edward RidleyÆs paintings are rare because, as head of art at the Birmingham Municipal School of Art, he dedicated his life to teaching. RidleyÆs lively paintings of rural life in the West Midlands were exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (of which he was elected a member in 1944) and the Birmingham School of Art, whilst his portraiture and extensive stained glass design, for which he won a gold medal, were much in demand. He was, for some time, the art critic for the Birmingham Mail. He worked on the Birmingham Education Committee and subsequently for Cheltenham LadiesÆ College and at the Central School of Art, London, where he was head of fashion design.
