        RIDGEWELL WILLIAM: (1881-1937) British Cartoonist whose works appeared in Punch. A charming original black pen and ink sketch drawn and signed by Ridgewell on a 8.5 x 11.5 piece of art board, n.p., n.d. The image depicts the cartoonist at the top of a ladder climbing on to a large elephant, Ridgewell’s eyes and hat just visible above the elephant’s ear. Signed (‘Ridgewell’) in black ink at the base of the image and further inscribed in his hand in pencil, in full, ‘Dear Renee, As I haven’t a photo I am sending you a sketch of myself getting on an elephant’.         WILLIAM LEIGH RIDGEWELL (1881-1937), "LONG SUFFERING ASSISTANT AND THE PROSPECTIVE BRIDE", POSSIBLY A CARTOON FOR PUNCH, signed lower left, inscribed, pen and ink, framed. 33cm by 28cm Note: Graduating from the Brighton School of Art, Ridgewell worked as a lithographer, illustrator and comic strip cartoonist. From 1920-1937 he contributed to Punch, influenced greatly by Fougasse and Bateman who said he brought in a new fresh spontaneous style to Punch.
