Arthur Grover Rider (American 1885-1975) Offset Litho on board of fisherman in Spain.Professionally framed and matted in gilt frame. In frame 39"x33"x1.25". Weight 16 lbs. Born in Chicago, IL on March 21, 1886. Rider received his early training at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In his student years he painted for the Chicago Lyric Opera and later traveled to Europe. While living in London, he painted for the London Opera at Covent Garden. He further studied at Académies de la Grande-Chaumiére and Colarossi in Paris, and exhibited there at the George Petite Galleries. For nine summers he painted in Spain and it was there that he met Joaquin Sorolla who greatly influenced his work. They painted together on the Valencian Beach, and when Sorolla died in 1923, Rider was an integral part of the funeral cortége. While in Spain, Rider's works were exhibited at the court of Valencia. Trips were made to California during the 1920s before settling in Laguna Beach in 1931. For over thirty years he was one of the leading scenic artists with MGM and Fox Studios. He painted murals for the Century of Progress Expo of Chicago in 1933 and the GGIE of 1939. A versatile artist, he excelled in painting florals, landscapes, seascapes, animals, and figures. During his last years he made trips to Taxco, Mexico and specialized in architectural themes such as cathedrals and buildings with red tile roofs. Rider died in Pasadena on Jan. 25, 1975.

A.G. Rider: Acclaimed Mid-Century California Impressionist. California Redwoods. (1886-1975) Arthur Grover Rider was born in Chicago and studied at the Art Institute Rider first started in scenic designs for Opera at the Lyric Opera and soon after in France. In 1921 he moved back to the US, settled in Laguna Beach and went to work for both 20th Century Fox and MGM studios creating backdrops for films as well as painting murals for the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago in 1933 and the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. All the while Rider was advancing his own reputation as a California artist excelling in painting fishing boats, seascapes, landscapes, florals, animals and figures. A.G. Rider died in Pasadena on January 1, 1975 and his works have since achieved in auction substantial prices. Offered is a watercolor that first appeared at Bonhams (Butterfields) Auction in the late 1990s. Auction tags still on verso, this watercolor measures 14 x 18" and has been on display in Monterey, California. Beautifully presented under glass in gorgeous antiqued and gilt wood frame, this work of California redwoods captured during a clear morning is simply outstanding. 21 x 24" Artist has signed in print in lower right corner. After beginning his formal artistic education at the American Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago, Arthur Grover Rider moved to Europe, continuing his training in London and in Paris. Perhaps most significant in his artistic development were the nine summers he spent painting on the coast of Spain, as it was there that he met and befriended the lauded Spanish impressionist Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923), and the two painted together until Sorolla's death. The present work strongly echoes Sorolla in subject matter, composition, and technique, with bold color, loose brushstrokes, and intriguing perspective all coming together to draw the viewer's eye to the work.
