Signed and dated by Irving Penn on mount at lower right. Originally published in Vogue Magazine in 1947. Reproduced in the book Here at the New Yorker by Brendan Gill, Random House, 1975. Slip mounted on posterboard at reverse reads "Sprawled in the foreground is George Price, and the cluster behind him consists from left to right, of Saul Steinberg, Richard Dekker, Barbara Shermund, and Richard Taylor...Seated cross-legged on the floor to the left is William Steig. The five artists loosely assembled behind him are Perry Barlow, Barney Tobey, Chon Day, Robert Day, and Helen Hokinson. On the central platform lies Charles Addams, and behind him, from left to right are...Alajalov, Otto Soglow and Carl Rose. On the platform to the right stands Whitney Darrow Jr., and at his feet sit Mischa Richter and Leonard Dove." Lot includes a slip from photograph conservator Jose Orraca from 1994 reading "Both the print and its mount were both surface cleaned. The photograph was unmounted in solvent. The top and bottom layers of the mount were split off the core; paper residues were reduced. The top and bottom layers were remounted to a new 100% rag, 4. ply core. Creases on the photograph were reinforced with Japanese tissue and paste. Cracks were coated with gelatin. The photograph was flattened repeatedly with moisture and heat and mounted on its original mount. Inpainting was done as it was needed. Provenance: originally from the collection of Mischa Richter (3rd from left on right platform), but sold at Serendipity Books in Berkeley.

Pen, ink, and wash on paper. 225x300 mm; 9x11 3/4 inches. Framed. Signed "Richter" in lower right image. Ukrainian-American cartoonist Richter was a regular contributor to The New Yorker as well as numerous other magazines and daily newspapers. His early satirical and political work was featured in New Masses in the 1930s when he also created WPA murals. His good friend and classmate at that time was American painter Will Barnet, whose sister Richter married.

          Mischa Richter (1910 - March 23, 2001) was an American cartoonist best known for his numerous cartoons published in The New Yorker over decades. He also contributed cartoons to Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post and This Week. An original pen/ink cartoon signed by "Richter", 14-1/4" x 17-1/2", has Henry Ford driving his car with two passengers in the rear seat, Father Edward Coughlin (the radio Priest) and Bund in Nazi uniform. Ford is explaining the his view to a very concerned Uncle Sam wearing a police cap. Henry Ford bought a small newspaper Dearborn Independent through which he published attacked the Jews and supported Hitler. Charles Edward Coughlin (1891-1979) In 1934, he established a political organization called the National Union for Social Justice. Its platform called for monetary reforms, nationalization of major industries and railroads, and protection of labor rights. The Bund was to consist only of American citizens of German descent.[6] Its main goal was to promote a favorable view of Nazi Germany.

Each holds the banner "Fight Crime Vote G.O.P." Thomas Dewey (1902-1971) served as the 47th governor of New York from 1943 to 1954. In 1944, he was the Republican Party's nominee for the presidency, but lost the election to incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt in the closest of Roosevelt's four presidential elections. He was again the Republican presidential nominee in 1948, but lost to President Harry S. Truman in one of the greatest upsets in presidential election history.

Lindbergh became a supporter of the Nazi pure race concept. Building on his belief that "racial strength is vital," Lindbergh published an article in Reader's Digest stating, "That our civilization depends on a Western wall of race and arms which can hold back... the infiltration of inferior blood."
