IM HAREM Öl auf Leinwand. 73 x 92 cm. Links unten signiert und datiert „E Richter 1875“. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. In einem rötlich ausgestatteten Innenraum ein auf einem großen Chaiselongue liegend eine junge Odaliske. Sie hat helle Haut, lange schwarze, lockige Haare und trägt ein schulterfreies weißes Kleid, das am unteren Ende bestickt ist sowie ein zartes rötliches Tuch um die Hüften. Links von ihr auf einem Teppich am Boden sitzend ein farbiger Musikant in rotem Gewand und gelber Kopfbedeckung. Stimmungsvolle Malerei in teils raschem Pinselduktus und pastosem Farbauftrag, die den Focus ganz auf die weiß gekleidete junge Frau richtet. A common theme in Orientalist paintings, the Old Testament heroine Judith, is depicted just after saving her besieged city by killing the general Holofernes. In other paintings that depict this story, artists have rendered Judith as an avenging beauty, proudly bearing her sword or holding the head of the general up for all to see. In this version, Richter depicts a confident Judith dropping the dagger she just used and quietly leaving the bedchamber. Le petit réconfort Sur sa toile d’origine 65 x 54 cm. Signé en bas au centre E. Richter   Edouard Wilhelm Richter est né à Paris en 1844. Ayant une mère d’origine Hollandaise il débute son apprentissage à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de La Haye avant de les poursuivre à Anvers puis à Paris pour travailler dans le giron de Léon Bonnat (1833-1922) et Ernest Hébert (1817-1908). Il expose pour la première fois au salon de 1866, travaillant d’abord comme peintre de genre, ses capacités de coloriste et sa touche précise l’amènent rapidement à l’orientalisme, genre dans lequel il excelle dans la représenta- tion des grandes orientales et des détails précis et choisis avec soin. Il reçoit une mention honorable au Salon de 1881, une médaille de troisième classe en 1901 et enfin une médaille de seconde classe pour le Salon de 1902. Il est reçu par Maurice Du Seigneur comme sociétaire du Salon des Artistes Français en 1883, lequel décrira avec admiration pour son discours d’intro- nisation « sa palette semblable à des pierres précieuses ». Son habileté et la richesse des couleurs de ses œuvres le rendent rapidement populaire aux Etats-Unis. Il sera source d’inspiration et d’admiration à la fin du XIXe pour des artistes comme Rudolf Ernst ou Ludwig Deutsch.
