Abstract art is about creating work that encompasses all elements of good art such as form, composition, color, structure and balance. The main difference between representational art and abstract art is that abstract art does not attempt to recreate recognizable objects or places. Instead, the abstract artist invents art that is unknown and comes from within the artist's imagination.

This may be expressed by the use of color, shape, and composition. The source or inspiration may come from landscape or specific objects. Or, it may be from an interest in different materials and structures. The subject or content of abstract art may be about creating an atmosphere or building a structure using geometric or organic shapes. It may be about exploring color or about expressing subconscious feelings. Abstract art is also referred to as non-objective art.
