      • Portrait of a Alfred Worcester Nordwell by Mary Curtis Richardson
        Apr. 08, 2020

Portrait of a Alfred Worcester Nordwell by Mary Curtis Richardson

        Est: $800 - $1,200

An oil on canvas portrait of Alfred Worcester Nordwell (1884-1972) by Mary Curtis Richardson (American/California, 1848-1931).  The work is unsigned, but was passed down in the family along with the previous lot, and both were known to have been executed by Richardson of family members.  He wears a white coat, replete with belt buckle.  The 14k gold belt buckle is presented as our next lot; 36" x 25.5" (sight), 44" x 34" (framed). Mary Curtis Richardson was hailed as the "Mary Cassatt of the West", a tribute to her isolated rearing as an artist in California and her natural bent toward impressionism.  While she had some training in New York, her family moved to California in the 1850s in pursuit of the gold rush.  Her favored subjects were portraits, often of children, with a very loose execution and reminiscent of Sargent, Whistler, Chase, and others who she encountered from the late 19th and early 20th century.

Portrait of Dorothy Nordwell by Mary Curtis Richardson, with Accoutrements

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

64.5" ht. x 34.5" wd. (framed). An oil on canvas, full standing portrait of a girl by Mary Curtis Richardson (American/California, 1848-1931).  Depicting a girl in colorful garb, full standing in profile, signed to the lower right.  Remarkably, the clothing she wears, along with the cap in her hand, are present and to be sold with the painting, each article in a fine state of preservation.  Dorothy Louise Nordwell (American, born 1901) lived in California, a prominent family of Swedish descent, and perhaps the clothing was an homage to her ancestry.  A portrait of her brother, Alfred, is also present in the sale. This is a particularly fine and large example of her most mature work.  While undated, it was likely executed from 1910-1915.
