THOMAS ADDISON RICHARDS AMERICAN, GEORGIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, 1820-1900 LANDSCAPE AT DAYBREAK Oil on canvas Lower left signed: T.A. Richards Catalogue note: Born in England to a Baptist minister, [Thomas Addison] Richards accompanied his family on a series of successive moves in America, beginning in 1831. In 1838, working first from Augusta, Georgia and then Charleston, South Carolina, Richards offered drawing lessons and began to write a series of illustrated travel accounts for which he would eventually earn national fame. His pioneering regard for the splendors of the Southern landscape, as evidenced in both word and paint, was first recognized in an 1843 publication, which noted that his "drawings of the beautiful scenery of the Southern States are almost the first pictures which have been made from this rich store-house of nature." In 1844, Richards moved to New York where he entered the National Academy of Design and began to exhibit with the American Art-Union. At this point in his career, he was best known for his romantic paintings of the Southern landscape, works which were clearly influenced by his Hudson River School contemporaries. From his base in New York, he continued to travel in the South, seeking out both views for his brush and picaresque episodes for his pen. His writings were a regular feature in such publications as Harper's, Graham's Magazine, the Knickerbocker and the Southern Literary Gazette, a periodical published by his brother and distributed from Athens, Georgia. A collection of his anecdotal adventures in the South was released as Tallulah and Jocassee in 1852, followed by The Romance of American Landscape in 1854. He is credited with creating an American tradition in travel guides by editing the first in a series of Appleton's Illustrated Handbook of American Travel in 1857. With the coming of the Civil War, the taste for paintings of the scenic South declined. Accordingly, Richards increased his teaching activity and expanded his artistic range by painting still life art. After serving as the first director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women from 1859 to 1861, he taught at New York University for twenty years, retiring in 1887. Always popular with his colleagues, he served as corresponding secretary of the National Academy from 1852 to 1892, a tenure unsurpassed to this day. Richards's works can be found in the collections of the National Academy of Design, Brooklyn Museum, Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum, Morris Museum of Art, Gibbes Museum of Art and Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Thomas Addison Richards (1820-1900) A Running Brook Late 19th Century The American school landscape is signed lower right front and displayed in its original frame with an important label pasted verso. The label from an unidentified event dates to the 19th century, the location of the exhibition is New York, the title of the entry is fully legible as noted above, the artist's name is intact on the line that reads ' Member's Name.' Records show that Thomas Addison Richards exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association. He painted in the Catskill Mountains, the American West, Europe, and, most notably, the American South - specifically Georgia and South Carolina. For Southern subjects he is most recognized and a most important figure in American art. Far fewer artists documented Georgia and South Carolina than did the Catskills and the American West. Richards' views of the Catskills and the western United States include mountains. His European views often include castles. This landscape includes neither of those, but most resembles the flora and style of the artist's Southern landscapes. Canvas measures 16 x 25 with a framed size of 27.75 x 36.75 inches. Sight size 14.25 x 20.5 in.; Frame dimensions 22 x 28.25 in. Thomas Addison Richards was born in London. His family immigrated to America in 1831, first moving to Hudson, New York and then to Charleston, South Carolina. By 1838, his family was in Georgia and Richards was in Augusta. While in Augusta, Richards taught drawing and painting lessons. He was also contributing his own work documenting his travels throughout the state of Georgia and the South, both written and illustrated, for publication in several different periodicals. In 1844, Richards settled permanently in New York City. He began teaching again, but also enrolled at the National Academy of Design. He was well known for his romantic American landscapes, especially those of the South. Engravings after his paintings were published in many popular books and magazines including the Knickerbocker, Harper's, Southern Literary Gazette, and Appleton's Illustrated Handbook of American Travel. As the market for scenes of the South dwindled prior to the Civil War, Richards focused more on his teaching. He served as the first director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women and also taught at New York University for twenty years. His own painting output switched from landscapes to still lifes. Richards work are found in numerous prominent public and private collections including the National Academy of Design, Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Harvard Art Museums / Fogg Museum, Morris Museum of Art, and Ogden Museum of Southern Art. 19th Century Southern Landscape Oil Painting by Thomas Addison Richards

      Est: $1,500 - $4,000

19th Century Southern Landscape Oil Painting by famed Georgia landscape painter Thomas Addison Richards (1820-1900) | Circa 1855 | Depicts a rural southern landscape scene with figures along a river or pond | Housed in a gold gilded wood frame | Approx. 34" W x 25" H | During the first half of the nineteenth century artists fanned out across the northeastern United States to find aesthetic inspiration in nature. Thomas Addison Richards was one of the few who traveled extensively in the South. Through his paintings, illustrated magazine articles, and guidebooks, Richards introduced the natural beauty and distinct characteristics of this region to a national audience. Richards was born in London, England, on December 3, 1820, to Ann and William Richards. The family immigrated to America in 1831, moving first to Hudson, New York, and then to Charleston, South Carolina. Around 1837 they settled in the small town of Penfield, Georgia, in Greene County, the original site of Mercer University, where Richards's father, a Baptist minister, served as a charter trustee. In 1838 the young Thomas Addison Richards's sketch of Tallulah Falls in northeast Georgia appeared in Georgia Illustrated (1842). The sketch is one of many natural wonders drawn by Richards. Richards left for Augusta, where for the next two years he offered lessons in painting and drawing and contributed travelogues about his rambles around Georgia to the Augusta Mirror, a local literary magazine. In 1841, sketchbook in hand, he left Augusta to travel around the South in search of picturesque scenes. The following year Richards and his brother, William Cary Richards, published Georgia Illustrated, which featured eleven steel engravings after Richards's closely observed topographical drawings. The brothers then collaborated on the Orion (1842-44), a monthly literary journal published in Penfield and printed in New York, for which Richards supplied stories and illustrated travel essays. Late in 1844 Richards settled permanently in New York City, where he gave art lessons from his studio and began taking classes at the National Academy of Design. He subsequently became a full academician and served as the institution's corresponding secretary from 1852 to 1892. Many of the paintings he regularly contributed to academy exhibitions were romantic landscapes of the South. Throughout the 1850s Richards penned numerous articles and books. He supplied illustrated articles based on his travels around the Northeast to Graham's Magazine (Philadelphia) and the Knickerbocker (New York). For the weekly Southern Literary Gazette, published by his brother out of Athens, Georgia, and Harper's New Monthly Magazine (New York), he submitted essays on his travels through the South. Richards enlivened his travelogues with personal anecdotes, legendary stories, tips on lodging, and engravings after his on-site drawings. Tallulah and Jocasse, a collection of Richards's short stories about the South named for two waterfalls in north Georgia, one being the famed Tallulah Falls, once known as the "Niagara of the South," was published in 1852. In 1854 a series of engravings after Richards's southern sketches appeared in Romance of American Landscape. In Encountering an Alligator, Thomas Addison Richards captures the native beauty associated with a southern swamp. Central to the painting are the live oak trees laden with Spanish moss, pointy cypress knees, and lush riverbank rich with plant life. This work was reproduced as a steel engraving in 1859, in &quotRicelands of the South," for Harper's Magazine. By this time a highly regarded chronicler of the American scene, Richards became, in 1857, the editor of the first major guidebook to the United States and Canada. Appleton's Illustrated Hand-book of American Travel included information on major cities, popular vacation sites, maps, transportation routes, and hotels, and featured engravings made from illustrations by Richards and others. In 1857 Richards married Mary E. Anthony, an author of children's stories. Thereafter, Richards concentrated on teaching and painting. He served as the first director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York, a position he held from 1858 to 1860, and taught at New York University from 1867 to 1887. At the National Academy and Brooklyn Art Association he exhibited still lifes and landscapes, often of tranquil southern scenes. Richards died on June 28, 1900, in Annapolis, Maryland. The Morris Museum of Art in Augusta is one of several American museums that own and display his artwork.

From his base in New York, he continued to travel, seeking out both views for his brush and his pen. Tallulah and Jocasse, a collection of Richards' short stories about the South named for two waterfalls in north Georgia, one being the famed Tallulah Falls, once known as the "Niagara of the South," was published in 1852, just one year prior to the creation of the work offered here. In 1854, a series of engravings after Richards's southern sketches appeared in Romance of American Landscape. Richards was painting at the height of his career when he created the panoramic and important landscape offered here. Clearly influenced by his Hudson River School contemporaries, the artist offers a scene that reflects man’s peaceful coexistence with nature and a reverence for the American landscape. The sweeping scene is anchored by the inclusion of a couple with a picnic basket in the foreground, highlighting the expansive countryside beyond them beautifully lit by the setting sun. The exacting brushwork of the foliage and expert composition attest to Richards’ skill at capturing a landscape. During and following the Civil War, Richards increased his teaching activity. He served as the first director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York, a position he held from 1858 to 1860, and taught at New York University from 1867 to 1887. Richards’ works can be found in the collections of the National Academy of Design, Brooklyn Museum, Harvard Art Museums/Fogg Museum, Morris Museum of Art, Gibbes Museum of Art and Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Artist Biography: Thomas Addison Richards was one of the nineteenth century's most popular painters of the Southern landscape. Born in London, Richards grew up in the center of the American landscape movement: the area surrounding the Hudson River Valley in Hudson, New York. Lured by the mystery of the South, he set off in search of new vistas and new paths and began his professional career in Georgia and South Carolina. There he earned fame as a painter, printer, and art instructor before rejoining the art world in New York City. He traveled widely, finding fresh inspiration in the Catskill Mountains, the American West, and Europe, but continually returned to the Southern scenes that had first captured his imagination and established his renown. His wide-ranging talent and versatility allowed him to carve out success in nearly every medium and genre: Richards was known for the landscape paintings, watercolors, illustrations, articles, and guidebooks that he based on his travels, as well as his fruit and floral still lifes, portraits, and seascapes. He became an influential member of the American art world, one who occupied an important post at the National Academy of Design for forty years, served as a professor of art at New York University for twenty, and arranged the first classes for women at the Cooper Union School of Art.Richards exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association throughout his life; his paintings were also featured at the Boston Art Club, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the American Art Union, and the American Watercolor Society. His work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Adirondack Museum, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum, and the Morris Museum of Art.

Note: In 1853 T. Addison Richards lamented that "little has been said, either in picture or story, of the natural scenery of the South." Born in England, his family immigrated to America in 1831, moving first to New York and then to Charleston, SC. Around 1837, they settled in the small town of Penfield, GA. Richards was an early advocate of the Southern landscape and through his paintings, illustrated magazine articles and guidebooks, he introduced the natural beauty and distinct characteristics of this region to a national audience. He left Georgia in 1841 to travel around the South and paint and draw the landscape. The following year, Addison and his brother, William Cary Richards, published Georgia Illustrated in Penfield, GA, which featured eleven steel engravings after Addison's paintings. In late 1 844, Richards settled permanently in NYC, where he enrolled at the National Academy of Design and subsequently became a full academician. He regularly exhibited his Southern landscapes in New York's most prestigious art shows and quickly established his reputation as a painter.
