      Charles Whitfield Richards (American/Louisiana, 1906-1992) "French Quarter Evening" oil on canvas initialed "C.R." lower left and handwritten notes reference provenance en verso. Framed. 10-1/4" x 13-1/4", framed 13" x 16" Notes: Charles Richards first arrived in New Orleans from Mississippi in 1927 to work as a reporter for the New Orleans Item newspaper. A talented artist, Richards became a member of the bohemian group of artists, writers and photographers who lived and worked in the French Quarter during the mid-twentieth century. The Delgado Museum of Art (now New Orleans Museum of Art) gave him a one-man show in 1943. The artist signed his initials in a hanging store sign. Likely purchased during a visit to the city, the handwritten inscription on the back of the painting identifies Helen Rhode Hooper of Lawrence, Kansas as the owner.
