        Est: $200 - $400

Jacques-Richard Chery was born in Cap-Haitien, Haiti in 1929. Before becoming an artist, he worked as a barber and was the owner of a gas station. In 1951, he was discovered by Philome Obin and later began studying at the Centre d'Art in Cap-Haitien. His popularity soared during the 1960's as his work became more widely distributed. Chery's early works are known for attention to detail, large forms, delicate palette and unique utilization of space. He is most reputed for his later works, which presented a complete change in color, theme, style and subject matter. His scenes of people carrying over-size baskets filled with over-size fruits and vegetables on their heads are almost cartoon like. He is known for his use of bright colors and bold size subjects. He has held exhibitions in many countries including the Brooklyn Museum, New York. His paintings have been sold in Sotheby's and other major auction houses.
