            Est: £2,500 - £3,500

Richard Wagner Fine autograph letter, signed ("Richard Wagner"), to his friend Richard Rühlmann, ABOUT TANNHÄUSER AND TRISTAN asking for his help in procuring a copy of the score of Der fliegende Holländer, noting he is uncertain how he stands with regard to Herr Müller [of Meser Verlag], who he suspects may bear a grudge on account of the matter of the French edition of Tannhäuser, asking him to approach in the first instance Kapellmeister Wehner, and to request a score in the form as it was prepared for Vienna, including the altered ending of the third act, requesting that this be sent to the address of Flaxland in Paris, adding that if Wehner does not have a copy available he is to be informed at once when a copy might be ready, as he intends to leave Paris in the course of the following month; in the closing section of the letter Wagner admits that he is in a very uncertain position, unsure as yet of his future movements, stating however that he is certain that towards the middle of next month he will be in Vienna to rehearse Tristan, the first performance of which is planned for October ...ich bin beständig noch in sehr ungewisser Lage, und weiss eigentlich noch nicht, wohin ich mich wenden werde. A fine letter written in the aftermath of the infamous Paris débâcle of Tannhäuser in March 1861, where after 164 rehearsals the opera was withdrawn following three highly disrupted performances. Wagner's subsequent plans to perform the recently composed Tristan (1857-1859) in Vienna ultimately came to nothing; the work's premiere - in Munich -would not in the event take place before another four years.

            Est: £1,800 - £2,200

Wagner (Richard, composer, theatre director and conductor, 1813-83) Autograph Letter signed to Emile Ollivier (Liszt's son-in-law, husband of his daughter Blandine, Cosima's sister), in French, 2pp., 8vo, [Paris], 12th March 1861, a problem with the composer's free tickets for Tannhäuser in Paris, Wagner asks how can he find words to thank Ollivier for his quite unmerited friendship? He suggests that they forget the recent days, "so full of torment and annoyances" for himself, and return to an existence more worthy of so delightful a friendship, meanwhile he is writing briefly to reassure him about the concern he mentioned over the conduct of an agent, "... I have sought information and learn that it is a matter of a small number of authors' tickets, which belong to the author by right for the first six performances and which can be sold. I was for a long time obliged to Giacomelli for my concerts last year, for which he received nothing from me. To give him something, I consented that he should have some of my free tickets, to do what he wanted with, just as, I am told, all authors do. I know, however, the danger of the conduct of this gentleman, which you have informed me about, and you must be sure that I will do all I can to remedy the wrong", folds, slightly browned. ⁂ The production of Tannhäuser in French at the Paris Opéra was to open the following evening. It was a scandal and a disaster, and Wagner withdrew it after three nights.

            Est: $10,000 - $15,000

STUART, James Ewell Brown "Jeb" (1833-1864) was a United States Army officer from Virginia who became a Confederate States Army general during the American Civil War. He was known to his friends as "Jeb", from the initials of his given names. Stuart was a cavalry commander known for his mastery of reconnaissance and the use of cavalry in support of offensive operations. While he cultivated a cavalier image (red-lined gray cape, yellow sash, hat cocked to the side with an ostrich plume, red flower in his lapel, often sporting cologne), his serious work made him the trusted eyes and ears of Robert E. Lee's army and inspired Southern morale. War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed "Henry B. Richard Co. G, 9th Virginia Cavalry, 1pp. folio, Camp at Orange Court House, May 11, 1863, addressed to General Fitzhugh Lee, and reads in part: "As I am a citizen of Missouri and at present a refugee from my home and state. I am very anxious to return to the west and assist in the redemption of my state. I served under Genl Sterling Price during the whole of his campaign in Missouri (in 1861) first as a private and afterwards with a commission which I only resigned when our forces evacuated the state. I then came to Virginia...I therefore most respectfully ask your consent and approval, to my being transferred to the Missouri forces west of the Mississippi River...." With Endorsement Signed on verso "JEB Stuart" as Major General who approves the transfer. Also endorsed by General Fitzhugh Lee twice, General Richard Lee Turberville Beale, Colonel Walter Taylor and Major H.B. McClellan. Fine condition.

GOULD, John (1804-1881) and Richard Bowdler SHARPE (1847-1909). A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds. London: Taylor and Francis (vols. I-V) for the Author, [1849]-1861; (Supplement) for Henry Sotheran & Co., [1880]-1887. 6 volumes (including the Supplement), large 2° (545 x 365mm). 418 fine hand-colored lithographic plates, many highlighted in gold leaf overpainted with transparent varnish and oil colors, by Gould, Henry Constantine Richter and William Hart, printed by Hullmandel and Walton, Walter and the Mintern Brothers mounted on guards. (A minority of plates affected by light spotting, heavier spotting in just a few cases, text also spotted in places.) Contemporary hard-grained green morocco, ruled in gilt, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt-lettered in 2, ruled in gilt in the rest, edges gilt by J.B. Hawes; volume 6 in 20th-century binding to match by Gray (extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance: Joshua Clarke (armorial bookplate); Sir Giles Loder Bt. (1914-1999) British book collector (sold Christie's London 2 June 1999, lot 38, bookplate). GOULD'S MASTERPIECE. "An incomparable catalogue and compendium of beauties" (Fine Bird Books p. 29). Most of the subjects came from Gould's own collection of Humming-bird specimens, a number of which he exhibited at the Regent's Park Zoological Gardens during the Great Exhibition of 1851. The plates gave Gould the chance to display the new technique of imitating the birds' iridescent plumage by the use of brilliant metallic coloring. This is an attractively-bound copy of good size. Businessman (1863-1914) and the founder of Sears, Roebuck and Company with his partner Alvah C. Roebuck. Essentially nonexistent DS, signed "R. W. Sears," one page, 8 x 13, 1901. An annual contract of indemnity, which reads in full: "Know all men by these presents, that we, Sears, Roebuck & Company, a corporation, organized and existing under the laws of Illinois are held and firmly bound for ourselves, our successors and assigns to the Maine Central Railroad Company, in the sum of Two Thousand ($2,000) dollars, lawful money of the United States. The condition of the above obligation is such, that, Whereas, the undersigned from time to time has and shall submit claim papers against the Railroad Company, without furnishing the original Bills of Lading; andWhereas, the undersigned has heretofore made and shall hereafter, from time to time, make changes in the consignment of good shipped by the undersigned over the lines owned, leased or controlled by the said railroad company, without surrendering the original Bill of Lading for the said goods, whereby claims for loss or damage may have arisen or are liable to arise against the said railroad company caused by the misdelivery of goods so shipped, and resulting from the failure to surrender the original Bills of Lading; andWhereas, upon request of the undersigned, the said railroad company, has instructed its agents to return to the undersigned, any shipment made by the undersigned, which has been on hand or may be on hand for sixty (60) days and refused or unclaimed, whereon billing or marks, show the said goods, to have been shipped from the undersigned from Chicago, Ill.;Now, therefore, if for and during the term of two years from the 20th day of November A. D. 1901, as to all claims losses, damages, injuries, rates or charges, arising within the period last aforesaid, the undersigned shall indemnify and save harmless the said Railroad Company of and from any and all damages, loss or injuries arising from the failure to furnish or surrender the original Bill of Lading in submitting claim papers, or in case of misdelivery of goods, shipped by the undersigned shall pay all charges and advances on account of the return of the refused or unclaimed shipments as aforesaid, then the obligation shall be void; otherwise, the same to be binding and of full effect."Signed at the conclusion in purple ink by Sears, and also signed by part owner and company vice president, Julius Rosenwald. With Rosenwald as VP and Treasurer, the company's annual sales climbed from $750,000 to upwards of $50 million. When Sears resigned the presidency in 1908, Rosenwald was named president and remained as such until 1924, when he resigned to focus on philanthropic efforts. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, staple holes to top left corner, a few scattered creases, a uniform shade of overall toning, and a small pencil notation to top left. Accompanied by an original stereoview portrait of Sears seated at his desk.Publishing the first Sears Roebuck mail order catalog in 1888, R. W. Sears helped change the direction of the worldwide marketplace by offering individuals a wide variety of products at reasonable prices and delivering those items directly to them. This gave consumers a new, convenient way to shop, and was the precursor to the electronic commerce that dominates the world today. This document is the firm's annual contract with Maine Central Railroad Company for the delivery services that made their entire wide-reaching business possible. An important piece in the operation of Sears Roebuck, this is the only Sears document offered at auction in over forty years, and the first we have ever seen. An incredibly rare autograph from a key figure in the history of American business.

Engraved frontispiece in vol. 1, folding map in vol. 2. Original purple cloth, sides ruled in blind, spine titled and with the author's name in gilt, yellow endpapers, in custom-made brown morocco-backed clamshell case (vol. 2 recased, hinges neatly repaired, small repairs at extremities). Provenance: bookseller's label on rear pastedown of vol. 2. FIRST EDITION of Burton's account of his first consular posting, and his first West African book. Burton's reports of gold and gold mining in Sierra Leone and Nigeria are credited with drawing public and corporate attention to mining prospects in a region, according to Burton, 'not more unhealthy than the East or West Indies'. It was Burton's intention to entirely suppress his name from this work and, in a roundabout way, to demonstrate his pique with the Royal Geographical Society over having appointed Speke to lead the second expedition to Central Africa. The publishers did, however, print Burton's name on the spines of the first edition, though not the title. Penzer, p.71-2; Casada 70; Spink 28. (2)
