        • MODEL 1873 U.S. TROWEL BAYONET AND SCABBARD
          Dec. 15, 2020

MODEL 1873 U.S. TROWEL BAYONET AND SCABBARD

          Est: $400 - $500

Scarce, early version of the Rice trowel bayonet in very good condition with excellent narrow belt loop first-pattern scabbard. Developed to keep a weapon for close combat and provide the means to entrench quickly in the field in the face of new, effective rapid fire and long range arms. Usually termed experimental, but widely issued to infantry in the field in the 1870s during the Indian Wars. An interesting piece showing changes in battlefield thinking. CONDITION: Bayonet very good. Thin blue on socket. Missing wood plug insert handle. Blade with good edges, originally bright finished, now smooth metal, muted silver. Scabbard, excellent. Mounts in place. Solid, with very good finish and color. SR

          Jun. 26, 2020

Carp Lake Mining Co Stock Certificate, Ontonagon, Michigan 1863 (111786)

          Est: $400 - $800

Cert. #2, issued to. L.E. Rice of New York for 100 shares and signed by A. Sanford as president. Nice vignette of a lake, presumably Carp Lake at center and miners lowering a bucket to others down the shaft at left. 25 cent revenue stamp at left. "The company's property is in the County of Ontonagon, and includes over 900 acres of land, most of which is well-timbered, and of the best quality for agriculture. It is upon the celebrated Porcupine Ridge of trap-rock, which, at the mine, is nearly 1,000 feet high, and extends parallel with the shore of Lake Superior. The northern slope is gradual, but to the south it descends precipitously to Carp Lake.Five or six veins have been traced running parallel, and dipping with the rocks. The vein is said to vary from two to four, and six feet in width, and to bear numerous masses and sheets of native copper, and considerable quantities of rich stamp work. The copper is chiefly found in one foot of the lower part of the vein, which is so soft as to be very easily and cheaply worked. The hanging wall is a dark gray trap, like that of the Minnesota mine. The average of the ore is said to yield 10 per cent, of ingot copper. Native silver, in minute particles, has recently been reported" (The Mining Magazine and Journal of Geology,1860). Extra fold lines and slight browning. Uncancelled. Provenance: Country (if not USA): State: Michigan City/County: Ontonagan County Date:
