Severo Calzetta da Ravenna (workshop) (Ravenna 1465-Ravenna 1543) : Acrobat

          Est: €2,000 - €4,000

Padua, 16th-17th century Bronze with natural red patina on black bituminous traces This curious oil lamp is part of the production of Paduan bronzes between the 16th and 17th centuries. The first studies attributed it to the foundry of Andrea Briosco known as Riccio (Trento, 1470-Padua, 1532), but today it is traced back, like many other similar objects, to Severo da Ravenna or, more generally to his workshop. In the wake of the rediscovery of the classical world which took place in the Renaissance era, commonly used objects, such as oil lamps, re-emerged, often characterized by a rather foul, philological taste. This kind of lamp is known in two variants, the other shows the man crouching with his back upwards.  These bronzes are commonly called the "acrobats" and are among the most curious and rare productions of Paduan foundries from 15th to the 17th century. The lamp proposed here falls within that taste and maintains the workmanship and patina of an object truly coeval. It probably had a ring welded to the feet that allowed it to be suspended. There are some similar models in various museums, among which we remember the Bargello, Florence, the Bode Museum, Berlin, the Correr, Venice. Leo Planiscig, Andrea Riccio, Vienna, 1927, figs. 200-203. Giovanni Mariacher, Bronzetti Veneti del Rinascimento, Neri Pozza ed., Vicenza, 1971, entry n.79.

Andrea Briosco detto Riccio (ambit of) (Trento 1470-Padova 1532) : Satyr holding a Jar

          Est: €5,000 - €7,000

16th-17th century Bronze black bituminous patina 22 x 10 x 9 cm In the Renaissance era, Satyrs came into great fashion on the wave of humanistic interest in classical antiquity. Satyrs with his mixed nature between man and goat, represented the ancient world in its Dionysian, sensual aspects linked to the natural world. The Paduan foundries created many objects with this theme. Andrea Briosco known as Riccio was the first to inaugurate this successful genre, but it was Severo Calzetta da Ravenna and Desiderio da Firenze who produced bronze objects intended for the studios of the Paduan humanists and nobility. The material quality, rough and deeply bituminous patina place this object in Paduan area of the 16th-17th century.  Comparison with the models of the Bargello, Padova, the Ashmolean and the Thyssen Bornemisza collection can be made. Western Europe, Italy or France, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. An enticing brass satyr lamp in the manner of Italian Renaissance artist Andrea Briosco called Riccio (Padua, 1470-1532), depicted seated on a tree stump with both muscular arms holding a large, gourd-shaped bottle of wine atop his furry goat legs. The mythical figure gazes upward, suggesting an acknowledgment of the viewer overhead. His lively visage features a furrowed brow above beady eyes, an aquiline nose between high cheekbones, and fleshy lips forming a slight smirk. A petite, forked beard extends from his chin, while sweeping, curved horns rise from his coiled coiffure crowned by the foliate leaves of a laurel wreath. • Model of ANDREA RICCIO (c. 1470 - 1532); century XVI. "The glorification of a hero." Bronze. It has a report from Doña Rosario Coppel.
          Feb. 07, 2023

Model of ANDREA RICCIO (c. 1470 - 1532); century XVI. "The glorification of a hero." Bronze. It has a report from Doña Rosario Coppel.

          Est: €14,000 - €16,000

Model by ANDREA RICCIO (c. 1470 - 1532); 16th century. "The glorification of a hero". Bronze. It possesses report of Doña Rosario Coppel. Measurements: 7,5 x 10,3 x 0,5 cm. Framed by a narrow frieze, the scene is composed of a series of figures. In the centre, a naked young man stands on a platform. On the right, a winged female figure, also nude, an allegory of Fame or victory, poses with her left hand resting on the young man's right shoulder. Between them, on the ground, is a base decorated with a bearded mask and standing figurines, a woman dressed in a chiton, and the other man, both with their heads covered with helmets. The former holds a laurel branch in her hand and the latter a flag fluttering in the wind. In the left corner is another base from which a snake is emerging. On the right, a naked man kneeling on the same platform as the main figure holds a list to be sacrificed. At the far end is a bearded man in a loincloth holding a knife. Behind the kneeling figure are two flute players and a man with a long beard, his head covered with a laurel branch. In the background we can see the laurel tree and sapling, and the remains of fragmented architecture consisting of an arch. Aesthetically the work is close to the production of Andrea Riccio, who was an Italian sculptor and occasional architect, whose real name was Andrea Briosco, but is generally known by his nickname meaning "curly"; although he is also known as Il Riccio and Andrea Crispus ("curly" in Latin). He is mainly known for his small bronzes, often practical objects such as inkwells, or door knockers, exquisitely sculpted and decorated in a classicistic Renaissance style. He was born in Padua and was first trained as a goldsmith by his father, Ambrogio di Cristoforo Briosco. He later began to study bronze casting with Bartolomeo Bellano, a pupil of Donatello. As an architect, he is best known for the church of Santa Giustina in his native city. His masterpieces are the bronze Paschal candelabra in the choir of the basilica of Sant'Antonio in Padua (1515), and the two bronze reliefs (1507) of David dancing before the Ark and Judith and Holofernes in the same church. His bronze and marble tomb of the physician Girolamo della Torre in the church of San Fermo in Verona was beautifully decorated with reliefs, which were taken by the French and are now in the Louvre. His smaller, easily transportable works attracted collectors from all over Europe. A bronze lamp made by Riccio was a long-time possession of the Rothschild family, and is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Venus - a table bronze from the workshop of Andrea Riccio (circa 1471-1532, Padua)

          Est: -

Rare Italian Renaissance bronze. Venus standing in contrapposto, holding a cornucopia, on a trefoil base surrounded by a relief frieze, resting on lion feet, candlestick, and baluster-shaped inkwell. Aesthetic interpretation of a female nude in an almost dance-like pose, delicate face. Two small drill holes for a now missing handle; small crack at the left heel, otherwise in exceptionally good, original condition with very fine brownish patina and traces of original black lacquering. Height 20 cm, side length of the base 14 cm. This form of a variably arrangeable table bronze is already described in early art-historical literature, for example the piece in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum in Berlin. Lit.: Planiscig, Leo: Andrea Riccio, Schroll, Vienna, 1927, pp. 385ff., fig. 73, 74, 238. Provenance: Robert Mayer Collection, described there as "Putto auf Sockelplatte, Paduanisch, 15. Jhdt". Condition: II

TISCHBRONZEFIGUR Höhe: 20 cm. Seitenlänge: 14,2 cm. Italien, 16. Jahrhundert. (1251403) (11)
