ARTIST: LOUIS J. RHEAD (1858-1926) SIZE: 16 1/4 x 22 in./41.2 x 56 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: L. Prang & Company was arguably the most influential and prolific publisher of American chromolithographs in the 19th century. What began as a firm specializing in album prints for collectors soon turned into one which produced not only full-color copies of famous paintings and popular war maps, but also an in-house magazine, Prang's Chromo: A Journal of Popular Art. For the holidays, the company always issued greeting cards, which were certainly among the offerings promoted in this poster. This is possibly the last advertisement made for L. Prang & Co., as it was bought out the following year. (Art Nouveau; Literary; American)

And though dolls would appear to be the gift of choice in Rhead’s Yuletide scenario, complete with a candlelit tree, The Sun wants to remind every purveyor of commercial goods that their publication reached the most desirable demographic for their advertising dollars. A noted illustrator of the Golden Age of Illustration, late 19th to mid-20th century, Louis John Rhead was born in England and emigrated to New York where he spent most of his career. There he was a member of the Architectural League, and the New York Watercolor Society. In 1888Rhead went to live in the United States where he was in the forefront of the American Art-Nouveau movement. During the Art Nouveau years of 1894 to 1896, Louis Rhead created lithographic posters for both "Century" and "Scribner's" magazines. The "Century Magazine" is known for its Art Nouveau posters during this period. He also had one-man exhibitions of his work in France, England and the United States. Rhead was an avid fly fisher and by his own account started fishing for trout in the U.S. sometime between 1888 and 1890. In 1901 he became interested in angling art and much of his later published works deal with fishing and fly fishing. His most famous and celebrated work is American Trout-Stream Insects (1916). At the time of its publication this was one of the first and most comprehensive studies of stream entomology ever published in America. ARTIST: LOUIS J. RHEAD (1858-1926) SIZE: 25 1/2 x 45 1/2 in./64.7 x 115.6 cm DESCRIPTION: The New York Sun—one of the earliest dailies in America, started in 1853—was a highly successful paper, relying on human interest stories. During the 1890s, it employed such journalist luminaries as Joseph Pulitzer, Arthur Brisbane, Julian Ralph, and Richard Harding Davis. This is one of several fine posters Rhead created for it, a forceful image that simply exhorts the potential reader to pick up The Sun, having secured their attention with a lovely Art Nouveau woman who bears the solar orb in her arms. LOUIS J. RHEAD (1858-1926) FOR FASHIONABLE WINTER CLOTHING. Circa 1896. 46 3/4x28 1/4 inches, 119x72 cm. Ellery Howard Co., NY. Condition B+: creases, abrasions and repaired tears at edges, some into image; creases and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. This is a rare and unusual work for Rhead, who primarily designed posters for publications. It appears to be a stock poster onto which the name of a specific retailer would have been added in the blank space at the bottom. No stranger to winter scenes, Rhead had used several winter landscapes as the settings for his posters for The Sun and The Century; however, they all depicted women. This is one of his very few posters to depict a man. The image appears as a color plate in Das Moderne Plakat (1897) and Kiehl illustrates a variation that announces a short story called "His Lordship," with the blank space at the bottom being used to fill in the name of the newspaper where the story was being serialized. Yeats, Kate Adair, and J.K. Huysmans. While American writers decried The Quartier Latin for the "total lack of decorous restraint which should exist between young people" (The Evils of the Latin Quarter, Chicago Tribune, 1899), all is elegant artistry in Rhead's cover illustration. Born in England, Rhead found equal success in London, New York, and Paris; his 1895 exhibition of posters in New York was America's first. Original Vintage Maitre de l'Affiche Pl 200 The Sun by Louis Rhead 1900

            Est: $400 - $800

Maitres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle epoque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Cheret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 - 1900. The varied selection of prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience it showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format. Louis Rhead (1857-1962) was an English-born American artist, illustrator, author, and angler. Rhead's art education began with pottery making: his family had operated and worked in the Staffordshire Potteries for at least three generations, and his father, George Rhead, had founded the Fenton School of Art. Louis Rhead and all his siblings have taken his father's class when they are children. He also collaborated with his artistic brother in book-illustration projects when grown up. In the early 1890s, Rhead became a prominent printmaker and was heavily influenced by the work of Swiss artist Eugene Grasset. Rhead's poster art appeared regularly in Harper's Bazaar, Harper's Magazine, St. Nicolas, Century Magazine, Ladies Home Journal and Scribner's Magazine. In 1895 he won a Gold Medal for Best American Poster Design at the first International Poster Show in Boston. He turned to book illustration later in his career and has illustrated works like Robin Hood, The Swiss Family Robinson, Robinson Crusoe, The Deerslayer, Treasure Island, Kidnapped and Heidi. This poster was designed to advertise the New York Sun newspaper. Ice skating was an extremely popular sport and social activity at the turn of the century. Note how the text is cleverly reflected in the ice! This is an original vintage print, not a reproduction. This poster is on heavyweight paper, and is in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
