    Misha Reznikoff (1905-1971). Portrait of Leo Tolstoy (Russian writer). Oil on canvas, size 98 x 67,5 cm (38 2/3 x 26 2/3 inches). Frame dimensions 101 x 70,5 cm (39 3/4 x 27 3/4 inches). Signed on the verso. Reznikoff was born in Ukraine and in 1921 immigrated with his family to the United States to settle in Rhode Island. At 22 Misha enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design where he won a three year scholarship sponsored by S.J Perelman. During this period he meets his long time friend, Arshile Gorky. Their friendship lasted until Gorky's death in 1948. In the early 30's he moved to New York where he became introduced to a New York's generation of the painters. Through the early 30's he worked as an art instructor at many institutions including Art Students League, Miss Halls School, Pittsfield, MA, and The New School for Social Research. In 1935 he joined the WPA and socialised with Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Milton Avery, Milton Resnick and Diego Rivera.

    Misha Reznikoff (1905-1971): 26 Works of Art on paper in pencil, sanguine, felt-tip pen and/or watercolor, many signed "I Resnikoff" and dated 1923, 1931, and later; together with an unsigned oil on canvas board and a work on paper signed indistinctly. Some papers damaged at edges. Artworks measure from height 2 1/4 inches X width 3 1/4 inches to height 18 inches X width 12 inches . NOTE: Resnikoff studied art at the Imperial Art Academy in St. Petersburg leaving Russia in 1917 and eventually settling in New York City where he worked at the Sherman Square Studios. He became famous late in life when it was discovered he was the painter behind numerous oil portraits of important Washington figures including JFK, but signed Charles J Fox (the pseudonym of his business manager Leo Fox).
