Joshua Reynolds Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Porträtmaler, Miniature painter, Flower painter, b. 1723 - d. 1792

Sir Joshua Reynolds' artwork is often recognized for its bold strokes and multiple thick layers of paint (impasto) that create an almost 3D effect on the canvas. Sir Joshua Reynolds' paintings were, in part, inspired by the works of 16th century Renaissance painters. Due to his ability to reflect realistic movement and emotion in his paintings, Sir Joshua Reynolds was among the most sought-after portrait artists of the 18th century.

Though King George III didn’t care for his art, and he was not popular with the monarchy, Reynolds became the first president of the Royal Academy in 1768 and received a knighthood. Much of Sir Joshua Reynolds' self-portraiture in the 1760s, during his classic period, was created with hard lines and lacks the warmth of his other works. • Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792), da Autoritratto, 1760 ca.
    Mar. 19, 2025

    Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792), da Autoritratto, 1760 ca.

    Est: -

"Joshua Reynolds: The Creation of Celebrity", Tate Britain, 2005, catalogo della mostra, p. 73). Il dipinto in esame è considerato da Martin Postle «clearly a later copy, and is definitely not by Reynolds himself». Lo specialista avvicina la composizione a due autoritratti realizzati intorno al 1773-1774 e riprodotti ai numero 12 e 13 del catalogo ragionato dell'artista (David Mannings, "Sir Joshua Reynolds, A complete catalogue of his paintings, New Haven, 2000, cat 12 e 13), segnalando in particolare che «There are many copies of no 13, and this is possibly one of them» (comunicazione del 29 settembre 2021).

  • Rare Sir Joshua Reynolds Etching YOUNG LADY FITZPATRICK AS SYLVIA 1791
    Oct. 27, 2024

Rare Sir Joshua Reynolds Etching YOUNG LADY FITZPATRICK AS SYLVIA 1791

    Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Rare 18th Century Etching after Renowned British Portraitist Sir Joshua Reynolds RA (British, 1732 - 1792) titled YOUNG LADY FITZPATRICK AS SYLVIA ( Lady Gertrude Fitzpatrick (1774–1841)) engraved by London engraving artist John Jones (c.1755-1797). Stipple engraving, aquatint and etching on moderately thick, moderately textured, cream laid paper. Inscriptions: Lettered, lower left: "Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds."; lettered, lower right: "Engraved by J. Jones Engraver Extraordinary to His R.H. the Prince of Wales & Princapal Engraver to His R.H. the Duke of York."; Lettered, lower center: "Publish'd as the Act directs Novr. 1, 1791, by J.Jones.No.75 Great Portland Street. | SYLVIA." Matted and framed under glass. Measures: Frame: 22-3/4" x 19-1/2" Site: 14-1/4" x 11-1/2". Etching rarely found outside Museums (https://collections.britishart.yale.edu/catalog/tms:22013 ). History / Controversy Regarding Subject: This original plate is the very first engraving / etching of the "Sylvia" painting. "Much confusion in the names of the portraits of “Girl with Grapes,” Collina, and Sylvia, was caused by an error made by S. W. Reynolds, which error was continued on all the plates engraved since "The third picture, which is always called Ann as Sylvia, was painted in 1787, and a sitting is recorded in May, 1787, as Lady Gertrude." "The plate was first engraved by Jones in 1791, as Sylvia ; and on the back of the original picture appeared the Government stamp, showing that it was painted after 1784, when the stamp was originated. The child in Sylvia is not thirteen, as she must have been to be Lady Ann^ — the date of Lady Gertrude’s birth is not recorded, but she was about three years younger. That the two pictures of Collina and Sylvia are the same child at the ages of three and ten is proved by Sir Joshua’s own notes, and S. W. Reynolds, when he engraved them, must have erroneously considered them as the two sisters." Provenance Sale, Sotheby's, Old Masters Paintings, 31 mar 2022 to 06 apr 2022, United Kingdom, lot 163 The play begins with King Lear, the aging monarch of Britain, deciding to divide his kingdom among his three daughters—Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. He plans to give the largest portion to the daughter who loves him most. Goneril and Regan, the two elder daughters, flatter him with insincere declarations of love, while Cordelia, the youngest and Lear's favorite, refuses to flatter him, insisting that she loves him "according to her bond, no more nor less." Enraged by what he perceives as her ingratitude, Lear disowns Cordelia and divides the kingdom between Goneril and Regan. The King of France, recognizing Cordelia’s true virtue, marries her. Act 2:TTKing Lear, is celebrated for its deep exploration of human suffering and its complex, multifaceted characters. The play has been adapted countless times in various media, including theater, film, opera, and television. Its themes continue to resonate with audiences, making it one of Shakespeare's most enduring works.

Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds, A complete catalogue of his paintings, New Haven and London, 2000, I, p. 528, no. 2067; II, p. 591, pl. 1608In the catalogue raisonné David Mannings notes that Ellis Waterhouse considered this picture to be a possible studio version after the prime version which sold at Christie's, London, on the 3rd December 2013, lot 43 (£602,500).The lot offered here was sold and reacquired twice by members of the Ismay family. The provenance listed in the catalogue raisonné by Mannings is confused with a similar version of close dimensions, which was sold by Ehrich Galleries, New York. Contrary to this, the present work has remained in the Ismay family since it was acquired in 1892. The identification of Edwin as the boy portrayed dates to the 1796 sale of Reynold's original painting, where the sitter was depicted as the hero from The Minstrel, a poem published in 1771, by Reynold's friend, James Beattie. An inventory of the original painting carried the following lines from Bettie's poem under the catalogue entry: 'A soul that knew no art,/ And from whose eye serenely mild/ Shone forth the feeling heart'. Although Edwin is the traditional title for the boy portrayed, Dr. Martin Postle has questioned whether Reynolds had the poem in mind when executing the painting and noted that the protagonist is shown without his 'short pipe' (see Mannings, op. cit.).

Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (1723 - 1792) Mrs. Letitia Sparrow (née Popham) (1746 - 1838) Oil on canvas In a carved giltwood frame With labels and inscriptions verso Lot Essay: Reynolds’ pocket books record five appointments in May 1766 for sittings with Mrs. Sparrow for this portrait. They took place on 14th May (at nine o’clock) 15th (at 3) 16th, 17th and 19th (all at 9). A payment of 35 guineas is recorded in the ledger on 6th June 1767. This accords with the price that Reynolds was charging for portraits of this size as noted in the front of a pocket book for 1764.   Another of her family appears to have been painted by Reynolds the previous year.  There is an appointment with a Mrs. Popham recorded for May 1765.   Letitia Popham was the only daughter of Thomas Popham of Bagborough House, West Bagborough, Somerset and his wife Sara. This was a branch of the Popham family who had long been wealthy West Country landowners. The family’s apogee was the appointment of Sir John Popham as Lord Chief Justice of England in 1592, a role in which he served under both Queen Elizabeth and King James.   Letitia married James Sparrow (1742-1804), the sole surviving son of Francis Sparrow of Flax Bourton, Somerset, and his wife Sarah Smith of London, whom he had married in 1730. James and Letitia had two sons and eight daughters. She died in 1838 aged 92 and is buried at Long Ashton.   The sitter is painted half-length, in a trompe l’oeil oval, wearing a blue gown trimmed with ermine over a chemise with a lace collar. An inscription on the back of the lining canvas reads: 'Loetitia Popham wife of James Sparrow Esq. of Flaxbourton, Somerset'.   There is an old label at the bottom of the back of the frame which reads:  'Laetitia Popham sister of Alexander m. James Sparrow of Flaxbourton'. REYNOLDS JOSHUA: (1723-1792) REYNOLDS JOSHUA: (1723-1792) English portrait painter, a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts. A good A.L.S., Joshua Reynolds, one page, 4to, London, 18th October 1783, to John Wauchope. Reynolds states that he has been desired by Sir William Forbes to 'send to you a note of what the late Lord Errol (sic) was indebted to me for pictures painted for him' At the foot of the letter Reynolds provides his account, totalling £163-5-0 and comprising a 'whole length' study of Lord Erroll (£105-0-0), a painting of Lady Erroll and a copy of the same (£26-5-0 each), an alteration to the drapery of a painting (£5-5-0) and a packing case (ten shillings). With integral address leaf bearing a good red wax seal (small area of paper loss where originally opened). With a contemporary docket recording Wauchope's response to Reynolds, 'answ[ere]d that I could not promise but would be disappointed if the debt was not paid before the end of the year'. Some light age wear and a few small, neat tears, one only slightly affecting a few letters of the signature. About VG John Wauchope (1750-1828) Scottish solicitor, Writer to the Signet. James Hay (1726-1778) 15th Earl of Erroll. Scottish nobleman who served as Rector of the University of Glasgow 1761-63. Reynolds painted a full-length portrait of the Earl of Erroll in coronation robes and holding the baton of Lord High Constable of Scotland from the time Erroll officiated at the coronation of King George III in 1761. Reynolds's ledger records that Erroll sat for his portrait in March and April 1762 and that the fee was 100 guineas. As the present letter demonstrates, this bill was still outstanding at the time of the Earl's death in 1778 and was not settled until 1783.
