RICHARD REYNOLDS (B. 1967, SHROPSHIRE, UK) Large Head (2) 1996 Acrylic on canvas 270 x 201 x 5 cm ARR Provenance: Karsten Schubert, London Acquired from the above by the present owner, 1996 Exhibition History: The New Neurotic Realism, Saatchi Gallery, London, 1998 Literature: ‘Saatchi Gallery Loan of Art’ published by Saatchi Gallery, London, 2006, pp.302 ‘The New Neurotic Realism’, exh. cat., published by Saatchi Gallery, London, 1998, n.p. Description: From Saatchi Gallery, Loan of Art, pp.302 – “A 1996 graduate of the Slade School of Art in London, Reynolds developed a style that fused painting and sculpture. After painting simplified cartoon-like heads and figures on canvas, he made them appear as if they were carved from wood, like the rough-hewn work of Stephen Balkenhol. Reynold’s tiny brushstrokes cover their skin like carved facets, giving their faces life and depth, in stark contrast to their flatly-modelled bodies”.
