        Est: $300 - $500

Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "Golden Hinde" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. On December 13, 1577, in a boat less than the size of a small modern tug, Francis Drake set sail from England on a daring three-year odyssey that would take him into oceans hitherto explored only by the Spanish. Drake and about 160 men ventured forth in five vessels: the Pelican (which he later renamed the Golden Hinde), the Elizabeth, the Marigold, and the supply ships Swan and Benedict. Of the five, only the Golden Hinde, with a crew of about 50, completed the voyage. After passing safely through violent storms in the Strait of Magellan, Drake raided Spanish settlements along the west coast of South America. Drake captured two vessels with cargoes of gold, silver and jewels that were so heavy, they caused the Golden Hinde to sail below her watermark. Continuing northward, Drake sighted what is now Canada's west coast. But bitter cold forced him to turn back, and he set a course south and westward to the Philippines and Molucca (the Spice Islands), where he negotiated a trade treaty with the local sultan. From Java to Sierra Leone on the Cape of Good Hope -- 9,700 miles -- Drake sailed without a port of call or a stop for maintenance. On his return to England in September of 1580, he was greeted as a national hero. Queen Elizabeth I came on board his ship to dub him Sir Francis Drake. His fortune and reputation as a brilliant navigator were made -- and the way was opened to England to become a global superpower. Image Size: 15 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 16.5 x 14.5 in. Unframed. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Emlain stamp and First Day Cover issued February 15, 1992. Measuring over 900 feet in length and boasting a beam of nearly 150 feet, the Emlain is an impressive sight at sea. Named after former President Amata Kabua's wife, the Emlain was used to freight cargo in the world's oceans from 1989-1991 carrying an assortment of goods in her nine holds. Ships such as the Emlain have been sailing the seas as important links in the world trade for decades. Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "Cargo Vessels" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. 28c Trade and Development stamp issued June 6, 1983. For thousands of years, families all over the world produced most of the things they needed themselves. They grew or hunted their own food, made their own tools and utensils, built their own homes, and made their own clothes. Later, men learned that they could have more and better goods and services by specializing and trading with others. As civilization advanced, exchanges became so common that some men ... eventually known as merchants ... did nothing but conduct trade. The most famous early land-merchants were the Babylonians and later, the Arabs. These traders carried their goods across the land on foot or rode donkeys or camels. In contrast, the Phoenicians became the chief sea-traders of ancient times ... shipping loads of cargo and goods across the briny deep. Today, sea-trade is a multi-billion dollar business, and is completely modernized. Gigantic cargo vessels ... such as those featured on this artwork ... can transport huge quantities of goods across the sea. Image Size: 15.75 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 20 x 16 in. Unframed. This artwork was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Souvenir Sheet and First Day Cover for the Mobil Eagle Majuro issued August 25, 1993. On August 25, 1993, the commanding oil tanker Eagle was christened under the ship registry of the Marshall Islands. This state-of-the-art vessel is fitted with advanced navigation systems, including an integrated bridge, and a fully-automated engine room. Built by Mobil to meet the exacting guidelines of the U.S. Oil Pollution Act of 1990, this magnificent vessel is equipped with a double hull to better protect the marine environment. This is especially vital to the citizens of the Marshall Islands, who glean much of their food from the fish-laden waters surrounding their tropical atolls. That nation's concern for the preservation of marine life was a key factor in permitting the Eagle to fly the Marshallese flag. The artwork also highlights the double-hull construction of the tanker. To protect them, the Republic of the Marshall Islands launched the patrol boat Ionmeto in 1988. She has sailed the islands since that time acting as a deterrent to those who are unlawful and as an aid to those in distress. With the classic lines of the patrol boats of World War II, the Ionmeto can carry a crew of 12. When the island of Tarawa fell to the Allies in November 1943, these ships quickly became involved in troop movements around Kwajalein and Mili islands in the Marshalls. However, in February 1944 the Japanese lost Kwajalein as well. Image Size: 14 x 24 in. Overall Size: 20 x 24 in. Unframed. (B14776)

Ore/bulk ships like the Emlain are especially important to countries such as the Republic of the Marshall Islands where air freight is costly and sometimes impractical. Image Size: 16 x 20 in. Originally owned by a family of English merchants, the Scarborough measured just over 111 feet in height and was unusually wide of beam at 30 feet. In June of 1788, this impressive vessel set sail for Canton, China. Under the command of Captain William Marshall, the Scarborough arrived on June 25 at a collections of islands which were later named for Marshall. Reportedly, 25 of the island's residents welcomed the visitors, greeting the grand ship with chants and boarding it as they sang. The Scarborough lingered in the beautiful Marshall Islands for almost a week, visiting such picturesque spots as Majuro, Arno, Maloelap, Erikub and Wotje. Image Size: 16 x 20 in. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 52c British Man-of-War HMS Serpent stamp and First Day Cover issued October 14, 1993. Designed by William Symonds, the HMS Serpent was built at the Deptford Yard in England in 1832. A brig-rigged sloop (an historic rating in the Royal Navy) the Serpent extended just over 102 feet in length and displaced 432 tons. A huge vessel, she normally required a crew of over 100 men. Twenty years after her christening, the vessel was assigned to the Pacific to ascertain the fate of the lost whaling ship Waverly. Under the command of Captain L.U. Hammet, the Serpent spent four days in January of 1853 visiting such islands as Rognerik, Wotho, Kwajalein and Lae. On some islands, the ship was met by friendly natives who traded with the crew, while other islands greeted the Serpent with resistance, proving the need for her 16 cannons. Image Size: 16 x 20 in. Rich treasures in the form of abundant fisheries can be found in the lucid waters off the Marshall Islands. And with a fuel capacity of 9,000 gallons, the Ionmeto is able to ride the swells and patrol outside the reefs for long periods of time. By the end of the 1700s, Micronesia had been intersected by three different trade routes. Established by British merchantmen, these paths also took ships past Ratak and Ralik, the two island chains of the Marshalls. With the advent of the fur trade, these lanes became heavily employed by cargo ships hauling pelts from America's northwestern coast to points south. The British Brig Nautilus, en route to Australia and China on just such a journey, sailed near the eastern edge of the Marshall Islands group. In 1525, the massive warship was part of a Spanish expedition launched to install a governor in the Molucca Islands. It is believed that the Santa Maria de la Vittoria visited the Marshall Islands while en route to this archipelago situated south of the Philippines. However, her journey proved to be ill-fated. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 35c German Warship SMS Nautilus stamp issued April 19, 1994. First launched on August 31, 1871, the gunboat SMS Nautilus was designed for military and surveillance use. However, on October 13, 1885, the craft sailed to the Marshallese island of Jaluit on a different type of mission. That day SMS Nautilus carried documentation officially allowing Germany to annex the Marshall Islands from the rest of Micronesia. Two days after the ship's arrival, a group of marines came ashore and marched to the home of the German consul. After bestowing gifts upon the local chiefs assembled there, the documents were produced, read aloud and signed in "English letters" by each of the traditional leaders. This was followed by a 21-gun salute and the planting of a sign that read "Imperial German Protectorate." Shortly afterward, SMS Nautilus sailed to seven other Marshallese islands where the ceremony was repeated. Image Size: 14.25 x 24 in. Overall Size: 20 x 24 in. Unframed. (B14615)

Unframed. Unframed. Perhaps the Eendracht used that route on January 25, 1625, the date ancient records reveal that the ship sailed by the northern reaches of the Marshall Islands. Under the command of Admiral Gheen Schapenham, the Eendracht's crew sighted Taongi, an island group situated in the northeast region of the Marshalls. This is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Missionary Packet Morning Star stamp issued June 24, 1993. "The long looked for missionary ship was a thing of life and beauty, adorned with nearly her full complement of snow-white sails, and sitting so daintily upon the water." This account comes from Rev. E. Bond's meeting with the Morning Star, en route to the Marshall Islands to fulfill the mission for which it was built. In August 1856, just eight months earlier, an appeal had been made to the American Board for a missionary packet. To finance this endeavor, the children of the United States were invited to take a ten-cent share of joint ownership in the new vessel. The project met with great enthusiasm and success. Within three months, the Morning Star was completed and on its way to spread Christianity to the islands of the Pacific. Overall Size: 16 x 20 in. Unframed. (B14318)

This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia 32c FSS Palikir and 32c FSS Micronesia Se-tenant Pair issued May 3, 1996. Patrol boats can trace their beginnings to early harbor craft that safeguarded major ports and coastal and inland waterways around the world. The duties of these vessels have always been to enforce local, national and maritime laws, and to carry out search and rescue missions. The design of the modern patrol boat owes a great deal to the PT (patrol torpedo) boats developed during World War II. The United States entered the war with only 12 of these craft in service, but they proved their value in combat early in the war, seeing extensive action around the Philippines. These fast and maneuverable vessels, powered by three Packard V-12 engines, were capable of speeds up to 45 knots and were ideally suited to the waters surrounding the Pacific island chains. The U.S. Navy soon had the Higgins and Electric Boat Company producing PT boats as rapidly as possible, and by the Battle of Midway in June 1942, 10 of the craft were available to supplement the American surface fleet. Beginning in October 1942, patrol boats participated in increasing numbers in every naval engagement in the Solomon Islands. The most famous of those vessels was PT-109, captained by future President John F. Kennedy. Overall Size: 14 x 36 in. Unframed. (B15357 / B15358)

This painting originally appeared in the foreground of the right side Junk stamp on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Hong Kong - Jewel in the Night Souvenir Sheet issued February 12, 1997. From the 15th to the 19th centuries, Chinese junks were the largest, strongest and most seaworthy vessels in the world. This type of boat typically served as a cargo vehicle. The junk rig or "chinese lug rig" is easy to handle, easy to reef, easy and inexpensive to build, easy to rig, has no complex hardware, requires no winches, is easy to maintain, involves very low rigging stresses, provides a low center of effort so requires less beam or depth of keel. These are admirable qualities for centuries old technology. Image Size: 7 x 14 in. Overall Size: 14 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15578 / B15579)

On August 26, 1843, the Whaleship Potomac, under the command of Captain Isaac B. Hussey, came upon the Marshall Islands. Once near land, the brig was approached by several curious Marshallese in outrigger canoes. Shortly afterward, the Potomac's crew went ashore to explore the intriguing Pacific paradise and gather coconuts. Three years later, Captain Hussey obtained permission from Britain's King George to live on the island of Kosrae, one of the four states of present-day Micronesia. It is believed that Hussey had sought asylum there after shooting a man during a mutiny attempt. After a few years, he left Kosrae to take command of another ship, only to be found dead on the deck, victim of another mutiny. Image Size: 13.75 x 24 in. Overall Size: 20 x 24 in. Unframed. Built in 1791, the British Naval Frigate HMS Cornwallis was an extremely large craft, measuring over 166 feet from bow to stern. Also known as the Akbar during her sailing career, she was believed to have been constructed in Calcutta. Captain Charles Johnston assumed command of the Cornwallis in 1806, piloting her from the Sandwich Islands to Macao, China. It was during this voyage that the crew spotted part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Captain Johnston named the land he sighted "Smyth's Island," which is today known as Taongi. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands Hong Kong Sunrise Souvenir Sheet issued February 12, 1997. Over 200 islands and islets make up Hong Kong, including Kowloon and the New Territories. In 1860, China gave Kowloon to Britain. In 1898, Britain leased the New Territories from China for 99 years. The lease expired at midnight on June 30, 1997, and all of Hong Kong returned to Chinese sovereignty. Acting as a hub for East and Southeast Asian trade, Hong Kong's position in the time zone makes it a key global financial market. Hong Kong has one of the finest and most picturesque harbors in the world. Each morning a diverse array of water-borne craft, from the smallest handmade canoes and Chinese junks -- unchanged in design for hundreds of years -- to the most technologically advanced ocean liners, weave in and out. Though little historical information about the trading schooner Equator remains, the vessel was mentioned by Robert Louis Stevenson in his 1896 novel In the South Seas. Due to its small size -- just over 66 feet long with a displacement of 72 tons -- Stevenson referred to the Equator as a "pygmy" schooner. Though the craft was built as a sailing vessel, she was later converted to steam power. Today, the Equator is owned by the city of Everett, Washington. Though she spent her last years of duty as a steam tug, plans to restore the Equator to her original glory have recently been discussed. Image Size: 16.75 x 24 in. Overall Size: 20 x 24 in. Unframed.
