    Pierre Reymond 1513 - 1584 French, Limoges, second half of the 16th century Tazza lid with the Death of Absalom in the wood of Ephraim grisaille and partially gilt painted enamel on copper, with flesh-tone highlights monogrammed: .P.R. and inscribed: II. ROIS. XVIII. the inside of the lid with the tetramorph surrounded by strapworks diameter: 18.6cm., 7⅜in. The lid was the subject of an agreement with the heirs of Dr. Adolph List in 2023. The heirs are extremely grateful to The Al Thani Collection for its assistance and generosity in securing the return of the object. ____________________________________________ Pierre Reymond 1513 - 1584 Limoges, deuxième moitié du XVIe siècle Couvercle de tazza orné de la mort d'Absalom dans la forêt d'Éphraïm émail peint en grisaille sur cuivre, avec rehauts d'or et carnations roses monogrammé .P.R. et inscrit II.     Escuela de Limoges, segunda mitad del s.XVI. Círculo de Pierre Reymond (Limoges, Francia, c.1513-1584) Oración en el huerto. Extraordinario esmalte representando un episodio de la vida de Jesús de Nazaret, presente en los cuatro Evangelios. Durante las horas previas a su Pasión, Jesús se retiró a orar a un lugar llamado monte de los Olivos y, en concreto, al Huerto de Getsemaní. Allí sufrió mucho y rogó a Dios Padre que apartara de Él ese cáliz, pero aceptó la voluntad del Todopoderoso. Fue acompañado por los apóstoles Pedro, Juan y Santiago. La composición está basada en el grabado realizado por Durero en 1508 y que forma parte de la popular serie "La pequeña Pasión". La Pasión de Cristo fue un tema extremadamente popular en la Alemania de los s.XIV y XV. Tras la invención de la imprenta, la serie que describe la Pasión se distribuyó en toda Europa, como resultado muchos talleres de esmalte crearon representaciones de la Pequeña Pasión de Durero. Se conoce una serie de placas pertenecientes al Maestro de la Pequeña Pasión que trabajó estrechamente con el renombrado esmaltador Pierre Reymond conservada en el Museo Nacional Soares dos Reis en Porto, Portugal. Limoges, en la región suroeste de Francia, ha sido mundialmente famosa por producir esmaltes durante siglos. Con origen en el siglo XII, la industria de decorar objetos metálicos, generalmente en bronce y latón (y en su mayoría hechos con fines eclesiásticos) en esmaltes de colores champlevé, prosperó hasta alrededor de 1370, cuando se produce un rápido declive donde estas preciosas habilidades de fabricación casi se perdieron. Sin embargo, a finales del siglo XV la producción de esmalte volvió a la región, pero con una producción hacia objetos más seculares. Surgieron nuevas técnicas, incluida la decoración pictórica directamente sobre el esmalte. Varios talleres franceses notables surgieron con sus propios estilos distintivos que, en algunos casos, también firmaban su trabajo. Estas piezas, que generalmente representaban escenas narrativas mitológicas o religiosas, a menudo platos, centros, copas o placas, se convirtieron en objetos muy preciados. Possibly from the workshop of Jean Court (Active, 1553 - 85) or Pierre Reymond (1513-1584) The theme of the scenes of Psyche's life was very popular among the artists of Limoges in this era, especially for the decoration of dishes. In the centre the scene takes place in front of an architectural background and mountainous landscape. The lip is decorated with an alternate series of winged dragons and fantastic characters with an enamelled human face, against a background of golden garlands of foliage motifs. The centre of the back consists of four fantastic characters joined by their arms and among them is a pair of birds with the face of woman and man. The lip is decorated with golden garlands of vegetable elements. Faults and restoration. Dishes similar to this one made by Jean Court include, for example, the dish representing the banquet of Cupid and Psyche which at one time was included in the important Limoges enamel collection of William Beckford (1760 - 1844), or the one dedicated to the scenes of The life of St. Joseph dated 1565, both now belonging to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The Louvre Museum has a Pierre Reymond dish portraying the Story of Psyche which was bequeathed by The Baroness Salomon of Rothschild. The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg has a series of six Pierre Reymond dishes that came from the Basilewski collection. Origin: Gift of the Duchess Villa Hermosa to the current owner.
