ARMANDO REVERÓN (Caracas, Venezuela, 1889 - 1954). “Queen with a crown and revererian dress”. Oil on jute or burlap based on the temple. It has remains of a certificate on the back issued by Don Alfredo Boulton.

      Est: €60,000 - €70,000

ARMANDO REVERÓN (Caracas, Venezuela, 1889 - 1954). "Queen with crown and Reveronian dress". Oil on jute or burlap with tempera base. It has remains of a certificate on the back issued by Don Alfredo Boulton. It has seals on the back of Don Alfredo Boulton. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 50 x 42 cm; 53 x 44 cm (frame). This work belongs to the last stage of the artist, where his paintings were invaded by colour resulting in a lively and expressive image. In this case, the main figure is the bust of a woman, hieratic and crowned, gazing roundly at the viewer. The artist divides the face in a symmetrical way, showing a cold side, where the skin turns blue, and a warm reddish side. A duplicity that generates an interesting chromatic play and that at the same time induces us to reflect on the duality of the human being. The work, painted in oil on jute, presents minuscule fossilised particles of vegetable origin, as well as particles of saltpetre, typical of places and marine environments adjacent to the artist's residence, located in the city of Macuto in the state of Vagas (Venezuela). Armando Reveron was a Venezuelan painter and sculptor, a precursor of Arte Povera and considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century in Latin America. He began his studies at the Colegio de los Padres Salesianos in Caracas. His maternal great-uncle, Ricardo Montilla, who had studied in New York, taught him life drawing and awakened his artistic vocation. By adopting primitive habits and detaching himself from the city, Reverón was able to develop a deeper understanding of nature; this led him to develop his particular method of painting using indigenous elements, and adopting procedures and materials that suited his desire to depict the atmosphere of the landscape under the dazzling effects produced by direct sunlight. Thus entered what the critic Alfredo Boulton called his White Period, between 1924 and 1932. At the beginning of 1940 he began his Sepia Period, which corresponds to a group of canvases painted on the coast and in the port of La Guaira in which brown tones predominate in landscapes of land and sea. He later suffered a period of depression after a psychotic crisis which forced him to be admitted to the "San Jorge" sanatorium of "José María Finol". Once recovered, he worked in a different style. From that moment on, he took refuge in a magical universe, around objects and dolls created by him, giving rise to the last and delirious expressionist stage of his figurative work, a stage characterised by the use of materials such as chalk, crayons and a theatrical fantasy that became increasingly expressive, but, through a drawing that aspired to academic correctness, sought to re-establish Reverón's emotional equilibrium. Today his work is to be found in prestigious art collections, some of the most important of which are the National Museum of Colombia, the Museo Nacional de Colombia, the Museo de Arte y Creación Industrial and the Museo de Arte y Creación Industrial; the Museo Nacional de Colombia, the Museo de Arte del Banco de la República, the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art New York), the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Blanton Museum of Art (University of Texas at Austin), the Museum of Latin American Art (MOOLA) - California and the Menil Collection Museum (Houston), among others.
