    Lili Réthi, Arbeiter an großer Kette, aus Serie "Germinal", Lithographie von 1921, gerahmt Lili Rethi, 1894 Wien -1969 New York City, österreichisch-amerikanische Malerin und Grafikerin, Arbeiter an großer Ankerkette auf dem Bau, Lithographie, 32 x 23 cm, im Stein sign. u. dat., hinter Glas gerahmt 1912 begann Réthi eine Ausbildung zur Grafikerin und Zeichnerin an der Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen, zu ihren Lehrern dort zählte Otto Friedrich. Von 1916 bis 1919 setzte sie ihre Ausbildung an der Graphischen Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt Wien fort. Sie ist vor allem für ihr umfangreiches Werk zu Themen aus Technik, Industrie und Arbeitswelt bekannt. From 1916 to 1919 she continued her training at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna. She is known above all for her extensive work on themes from technology, industry and the world of work.

    LILI RETHI (1896-1969) POST OFFICE UNDERGROUND MAIL TRAIN: LONDON. Circa 1935. 40 1/4x50 inches, 102 1/4x127 cm. GPO, London. Condition B+ / A-: repaired tears and expert overpainting in margins; small pencil number 301 in lower left margin. Raised in Vienna, Rethi became a skilled illustrator of industrial subjects. Her enthusiastic admiration for the Machine Age caught the eye of the Nazi Party, which tried to enlist her artistry to serve their propaganda needs. She fled to New York in 1939, stopping in London on the way. While there, she is known to have designed two posters, this one, and another for the LMS. The six and a half mile underground mail route in London went into service in 1927 and remained in use through 2003.

    Lili Rethi (1896-1969) Crewe Works Building "Coronation" Class Engines, original poster printed for LMS by Jordison c 1938 - 102 x 127 cm Prior to the introduction of the Coronation service, No. 6220 underwent speed trials with a special train in 1937. Just south of Crewe the train achieved a speed of 114 miles per hour (183 km/h), beating the previous record for a steam train (held by the LNER by a slim margin. Insufficient braking distance had been left before entering a series of crossover points at Crewe, and although the train held the rails, much crockery in the dining car was smashed. After this incident, the LMS and LNER agreed to stop dangerous record-breaking runs which were in effect publicity stunts.
