Francisco Jose de Resende (1825-1893) Dim. Max.: Francisco Jose de Resende (1825-1893) Oil on canvas. Signed on verso. Francisco Jose de Resende was 16 years old when he started his fine arts studies at the " Academia Portuense de Belas Artes" (APBA) - Oporto Fine Arts Academy . He exibited for the first time in 1848 at the APBA and that very same year he received lessons from the Swiss painter Auguste Roquemont (1804-1852) living and working in Portugal. In 1850 Resende had his own studio in Oporto. Two years later King Fernando II of Portugal awarded him a study grant in Paris where he practiced under the direction of Adolphe Yvon (1817-1893). During the next decade he exhibited in Oporto and Paris (1876), traveleed to London, Germany, France, Italy and Belgium. In the seventies, of the 19th Century, Resende exhibited his works in Madrid(1881) and again in Paris (1889). His portraits of the Royal Prince of Naples, King Luis I, Queen Maria Pia, King Carlos, the Marquis of Pombal, D. Maria Antonia Ferreira, and Pasteur (for the Oporto School of Surgery and Medicine) were much aclaimed. He died in 1893 in Oporto. Dim.: 48.5 x 38.0 cm
