    • KISHI RENZAN (1805 – 1859): TIGER AND DRAGON
      Feb. 03, 2018

KISHI RENZAN (1805 – 1859): TIGER AND DRAGON

      Est: €1,200 - €2,400

Pair of picture rolls with ink on paper. Japan, 19th cent. left-hand roll: Notable is how the tiger is portrayed here like an energy-charged rock – with fully carnivorous-feline vitality! Symbolically, the tiger (tora) is sovereign of the world, while the dragon is a rules the celestial spheres. In this image, the tiger thrones on an exposed rock, half part of it and half not. The small, husky head on its broad body looks threatening while the eyes transport a sense of its slyness and look as if ready to attack. Its coat, on the other hand, seems to disappear into the rock. … right-hand roll: This role features the divine counterpart to the tiger, the dragon (tatsu). Using his generous, powerful brush style here, Renzan has painted a dynamic mixture of steaming clouds and almost boiling sea waves spraying up powerfully – with the dragon’s head between them. The head has horns protruding backwards, barbels and a – surprisingly – almost human, longing gaze with its eyes directed upwards … Here too, the brush of the artist is more skittish and sensitive than it is illustrative, while still retaining its capacity for dramatic intensification! Kishi Renzan was a stepson and the first student of Ganku, the founder of the Kishi-school. The character for Kishi corresponds to that of Gan, as in Ganku and is only a different way of reading their family name. In the lower left and right hand corners are signatures, one of which reads REN-ZAN 連 山 ..., while other other reads KISHI no saku 岸 之 作, as well as red, somewhat faded seals. Silk brocade mounting, ivory-colored horn rollers. Wooden box for both rolls. Inscription on the lid Renzan ryuko tsuifuku - “Pair of picture rolls with dragon and tiger by Renzan”. Condition report: On the whole, very good condition IMAGE DIMENSION 103,7 x 27,7 CM, ROLLS 182,5 x 41 CM From a private German collection Condition reports and further images are available upon request - Expertise: Wolfmar Zacken
