Winold Reiss Great Northern Railway : Two Posters 1946 39.25 h x 15.75 w in (100 x 40 cm) In operation from 1889 to 1970, the Great Northern Railway ran from Saint Paul, Minnesota to Seattle, Washington as the northernmost transcontinental railroad in the U.S. Reiss pays tribute to the Native Americans who have resided along this northwestern route: one image shows a Pegan Chief in Glacier National Park, and the other tells the story of a Blackfeet dancing boy. Featured in this lot is this framed, Winold Reiss Blackfeet Native American print circa 1940-50s. Winold Reiss was born in Germany in 1886. Following in the footsteps of his father, Winold became an artist, studying art in Munich. In 1913, Winold came to the United States with a Romantic Idealism of Native Americans and the vast Western Frontier. 1919 found Winold Reiss in Montana where he befriended Natives in the Blackfoot tribe. He made pastel portrait drawings of many of the Blackfeet he had met. Reiss was able to capture individual traits as well as a high degree of human dignity; his portraits were sensitive and sympathetic depictions. Sometime after 1924, Reiss was commissioned by the Great Northern Railway to paint a series of portraits of Native Americans for a series of calendars. Mr. Reiss enjoyed a long partnership with the railroad, travelling many times to Glacier Park. His works for the railway documented a people in transition and cultivated respect for the Natives. When he died in 1953, the Blackfeet spread his ashes along the Eastern edge of Glacier National Park. The print shows a young boy in traditional dress holding a traditional dance wand/ shaker. He wears two feathers on his head and has his hair in two braids. The piece is set in a beautifully carved wood frame showing geometric and floral designs throughout. The artwork shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years and staining present. The frame shows wear from its age and use over the years as well. The visible art measures 16 7/16" L x 9 1/2" W, while the entire piece measures 21 5/8" L x 14 9/16" W x 1 1/2" D. It weighs 3 pounds and 14 ounces.

Featured in this lot is this Winold Reiss (1886-1953) framed artwork collection. There are four pieces of artwork in this collection that shows wooden frames fashioned like pieces of bamboo. The first is Spopeia and Mameia: two children of the Kainahs. The second is called Not Real Bear Woman: picking kinnikinic, the small leaves of the bear-berry plant are dried and mixed with smoking tobacco. The third is called Only Child: pecunnie girl-sitting against a tepee back-rest made of thin willow sticks. The last is called Arrow Top: Pecunnie Brave smoking red stone pipe, such pipes are made from soft stone which came from great distances. Winold Reiss was a German-born American artist and graphic designer. He was born in Karlsruhe, Germany. In 1913 he immigrated to the United States, where he was able to follow his interest in Native Americans. In 1920 he went West for the first time, working for a lengthy period on the Blackfeet Reservation. The condition of this collection of Winold Reiss artwork is good with some slight wear to the frames but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of these pictures is 12 3/4" x 9 1/2" with the visible artwork measuring 11 3/4" x 8 3/4". The collective weight of this artwork is 4lb 10oz.

Winold (Fritz Winold) Reiss (1886 - 1953) was active/lived in New York, Montana, Nevada / Germany. Winold Reiss is known for Indian portrait and mural painting, illustration. Born in Germany, Winold Reiss grew up in the Black Forest and came to be a foremost American painter of Indian portraits. He is also considered a modernist, a part of the Art Deco vanguard. In Munich, he studied at the Royal Academy and the Art School, and having been impressed by novels of James Fenimore Cooper, came to the United States in 1913 with the purpose of painting Indians like those he had read about. He arrived in New York City with little money and realized he was still a distance from Indian country, so he first got established as a portrait, landscape, and mural painter, art teacher, and interior designer. In the latter capacity, he successfully decorated several restaurants and other public buildings and had a commission for the Hotel Crillon. All of this activity allowed him to save money for travel. In 1919, he went West, visiting the Blackfeet Indians who made him an honorary member of the tribe, naming him "Beaver Child." He returned to their reservation in Browning, Montana most summers between 1920 and 1940 while continuing to live in New York. Eighty one of his portraits were published by the Great Northern Railway. Also during the 1920s and 1930s, he painted many scenes of Harlem, during the creative period known as the Harlem Renaissance. In 1939, he completed, what was then, the world's largest mural for the New York World's Fair. Also he ran art schools in New York City, Woodstock and Glacier National Park. In fact, he spent many summers teaching at Glacier National Park and at that time, was probably the state's leading art teacher. He painted other western scenes including the Grand Canyon. and he gave lectures on color and mural painting. His technique was to work quickly on a large sheet of Whatman Board with pastel and tempera, media that dried quickly so he could quickly finish his portraits. Often the elderly Indians would fall asleep, so he would fill on the decoration on their clothing later. He often used motifs from the Indian crafts in the background of his paintings. His art was also used in advertising as evidenced by a Great Northern Railway travel advertising poster of 1941, depicting his painting entitled Sundance-Piegan Chief-Glacier National Park.

Oil on Board. 42 1/2" by 73". Panel features two Indians smoking, the park's vast mountain range sprawls behind them. Indians featured are: No Runner; Calling First Provenance: Ex Stainsby Collection. Prior to his collection they were acquired from a farmer outside of Glacier National Park. The story we are told is that they were cut off the side of a barn outside of Glacier National Park. A passerby noticed them and asked the farmer if he could have them, and the farmer stated that he could if he was able to remove them from the barn siding. There is evidence of glue on the back. The panels were likely hung in a train station near the park, and most likely removed following renovations. Panel is being sold as-is, and in the manner of Winold Reiss. Winold Reiss is known for Indian portrait and mural painting, illustration. Born in Germany, Winold Reiss grew up in the Black Forest and came to be a foremost American painter of Indian portraits. He is also considered a modernist, a part of the Art Deco vanguard. In Munich, he studied at the Royal Academy and the Art School, and having been impressed by novels of James Fenimore Cooper, came to the United States in 1913 with the purpose of painting Indians like those he had read about. He arrived in New York City with little money and realized he was still a distance from Indian country, so he first got established as a portrait, landscape, and mural painter, art teacher, and interior designer. In the latter capacity, he successfully decorated several restaurants and other public buildings and had a commission for the Hotel Crillon. All of this activity allowed him to save money for travel. In 1919, he went West, visiting the Blackfeet Indians who made him an honorary member of the tribe, naming him "Beaver Child." He returned to their reservation in Browning, Montana most summers between 1920 and 1940 while continuing to live in New York. Eighty one of his portraits were published by the Great Northern Railway. Also during the 1920s and 1930s, he painted many scenes of Harlem, during the creative period known as the Harlem Renaissance. In 1939, he completed, what was then, the world's largest mural for the New York World's Fair. Also he ran art schools in New York City, Woodstock and Glacier National Park. In fact, he spent many summers teaching at Glacier National Park and at that time, was probably the state's leading art teacher. He painted other western scenes including the Grand Canyon. and he gave lectures on color and mural painting. His technique was to work quickly on a large sheet of Whatman Board with pastel and tempera, media that dried quickly so he could quickly finish his portraits. Often the elderly Indians would fall asleep, so he would fill on the decoration on their clothing later. He often used motifs from the Indian crafts in the background of his paintings. His art was also used in advertising as evidenced by a Great Northern Railway travel advertising poster of 1941, depicting his painting entitled Sundance-Piegan Chief-Glacier National Park.
Oil on Board. 42 1/2" by 73". Panel features two Indians smoking, the park's vast mountain range sprawls behind them. Indians featured are: Big Face Chief; Arrow Top. Provenance: Ex Stainsby Collection. Prior to his collection they were acquired from a farmer outside of Glacier National Park. The story we are told is that they were cut off the side of a barn outside of Glacier National Park. A passerby noticed them and asked the farmer if he could have them, and the farmer stated that he could if he was able to remove them from the barn siding. There is evidence of glue on the back. The panels were likely hung in a train station near the park, and most likely removed following renovations. Panel is being sold as-is, and in the manner of Winold Reiss.
