Reinike II-III" lower center, 35 5/8 in. x 47 5/8 in., framed, overall 37 in. x 49 1/8 in. x 1 5/8 in. Note: Charles Henry Reinike was one of New Orleans’ most respected artists and art teachers for almost fifty years. A native New Orleanian, Reinike studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago before returning to the city in 1930 when he opened an art school at 630 Toulouse Street in the French Quarter. He also worked for the Federal Art Project, the U.S. Coast Guard and Higgins Industries. A year before the war ended, Reinike closed the school, retaining the space as an art gallery. He produced a body of work that was inspired by his love of New Orleans and South Louisiana, and while he experimented with different media over the years, watercolor was clearly a favorite. Reinike contributed much to the New Orleans art scene, from his paintings to public installations. Following in his father’s (and artist mother’s) footsteps, Charles Henry Reinike III is a painter, sculptor and gallery owner. Born in New Orleans, he studied at St. John’s College in Santa Fe and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Early in his career, he worked with his father on large, commissioned works, first as an apprentice and later as a partner. He assumed ownership of the Reinike Gallery in 1971, relocating it from New Orleans to Atlanta in 1988. In addition to his work in art restoration, Reinike III has created paintings, murals, functional art and sculpture, often in pewter. He has continually developed techniques to work with nontraditional materials and imbues his work with both beauty and deeper meaning, harkening to his studies in philosophy and Ancient Greek. Bon Ton Café was an institution on the restaurant scene of New Orleans. Opened in 1877 at 308 Magazine Street when Englishman Edward Prophet renamed what had been called the St. James Hotel Saloon, the restaurant moved twice, first to 322 Magazine and finally to 401 Magazine. In 1953, Bon Ton Café was acquired by Al and Alzina Pierce, marking the beginning of seventy years of ownership by the Pierce family. In 1972, the Reinikes were commissioned to create murals for the café, resulting in the three large-scale works offered here. Featuring hallmarks of Acadian and Creole cuisine, the cast pewter sculptures were designed to visually express nature’s bounty in South Louisiana in a collaboration between the father and son artists. The process began with sketches, moved to clay models and a mold in which the molten pewter was cast. Finally, the castings were ground and trimmed before they were toned with acid, smoothed and polished. The completed castings were assembled to create the full design, soldered together and attached to the framed wood background. These panels adorned the beloved restaurant’s walls until its sale in 2020. Neal Auction would like to thank Charles H. Reinike III for his assistance with the cataloguing of these lots.
