        CHARLES STANLEY REINHART (AMERICAN, 1844-1896) SKETCHES, LOT OF NINE, Civil War subjects include an Abraham Lincoln portrait and a battle scene titled "Why Lee Surrendered"; also a self-portrait; a Pittsburgh street scene; etc. Some signed. Second half 19th century. 3 1/4" x 2" to 7 5/8" x 11 1/4".  Catalogue Note: Charles Reinhart was born in Pittsburgh. He worked as an illustrator and draughtsman for Harper Brothers for many years. He studied and painted in Paris on two different occasions. He spent the remainder of his time working in New York City.

        Large Illustration 22" 1/4 x 34". Titled "The First Thanksgiving". Signed lower left. One of his finest works. This illustration appeared in the December 1, 1894 issue of Harpers Weekly. Image depicts a contest between an Indian man with a bow and Colonist with a musket before a number of casual spectators.

        Reinhart, Charles Stanley (United States, 1844-1896). "A Lady of Ye Empire By S I Rivis" c.1880. Hand painted ceramic tile in black and white. Bust style portrait of a woman with a tilted hat. Tile reads on back: "Josiah, Wedgewood and Sons, Etruria." Signed on back: C. S. Reinhart. Tile: 8" x 8". Wooden frame: 10 5/8" x 10 5/8". Provenance: Charles Stanley Reinhart, born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania was an accomplished painter and illustrator winning multiple awards in the 1889 Paris Exhibition as well as being a member of the Tile Club in the United States. Started in 1877 by a group of artists, the club was created as a means to recreate socially as young and upcoming artists and partake in the china painting craze that was sweeping the nation. They met socially at each other's home and studios, eating, drinking, discussing matter of the day, and painting tiles. Many of the tiles they kept or shared among each other. However, Homer, particularly proud of his tiles exhibited them at the Century Club and in his studio with the intent to sell. The tile club dissolved around 1888, by which time many of the young artists had establish themselves professionally. Condition: Some light crazing to tile primarily in white areas. A few minor scratches.
