    After D.R. Andrews, depicting the dramatic rescue of passengers and crew from paddle steamer Forfarshire , foundered on the rocks off the Farne Islands Aquatint with hand-colouring 1839, John Wilson & Co. 405 x 510mm. (16 x 20 in) With a larger engraved view of the same rescue, after James Wilson Carmichael and Henry Lee Parker; also with The Return of the Life-Boat off Whitby, engraving with hand-colouring by Arthur Willmore after Edward Duncan, all unframed (3) Grace Horsley Darling (1815-1842) was raised in the Longstone lighthouse on the Farne Islands. She and her father rowed over a mile in heavy seas, too dangerous for the nearest lifeboat at Seahouses to be put to sea, and rescued 8 men and a woman of the 62 originaly aboard the Forfarshire , on 7th September, 1838. She became a national heroine and was lavished with money and gifts.

    After H.J. Leathern, depicted rounding the Cape of Good Hope on her maiden voyage to China, the first iron steam vessel to do so Aquatint, [c.f. C.253] 1841, Colnaghi & Puckle 350 x 520mm. (13 3/4 x 20 1/2 in) Unframed The Honourable East India Comapny's Steamship Nemesis was the first man-of-war to be built of iron, and was instrumental in destroying the Chinese defences at the mouth of the Canton river in the 1st China War in 1841.
