Mark Redkin - Russian (1908-1987)

Mark Redkin laboured as an electric welder before joining the newspaper Kommunist in 1928. In 1932 he moved to Leningrad to work for the Tass news agency. Redkin is renowned for his participation in two separate around-the-world expeditions. He made his first voyage in 1932 as a sailor and photographer aboard the ship Aleut. During this excursion, he made images which were later to appear in the book Around the World for Whale. During World War II Redkin was a correspondent for several publications including the newspaper Krasnaia Zvezda (Red Star). In 1946 he collaborated with USSR in Construction producing a series of under-sea photographs entitled Meeting with a Shark. He made his second global voyage in 1961 with the fishing vessel Actubinsk. Later in his life he worked with the book-publishing house Planeta.
