JOAN REBULL (Reus, 1899 - Barcelona, 1981). "Sant Jordi". Copper. Signed in the inferior zone. Measurements: 39 cm (diameter). Considered to be the most outstanding Catalan sculptor of his time, Joan Rebull began in the world of sculpture in his native city, with the sculptor Pau Figueres. In 1915 he moved to Barcelona to begin his artistic training at the La Lonja School of Fine Arts, while at the same time working in the workshop of the marble worker Bechini. In 1916 he made his solo debut with an exhibition at the Centro de Lectura in Reus, and the following year he founded, together with other artists, the group known as "Els Evolucionistes" (The Evolutionists), which aimed to counter the Catalan Noucentisme. In 1921 he travelled to London and Paris, where he was particularly impressed by the ancient art housed in their museums. Between 1926 and 1929 he lived in the French capital and took part in the Salon des Indépendants, although he also sent works to exhibitions in Barcelona. In Paris he was the first artist to be contracted by the prominent Catalan art dealer Joan Merli. On his return he was appointed president of the new Montjuic Salon (1932) and a member of the Sant Jordi Academy (1934), took part in various exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona and, in 1938, won the Campeny Prize at the Salon d'Automne in Barcelona. After the war, he went into exile in Paris, where he took an active part in artistic life, taking part in the exhibition "Le Jeune Sculpture Française" and the Salons d'Automne. He returned to Barcelona in 1948, and three years later won a great prize at the I Bienal Hispano-American Art Biennial in Madrid. In 1962 he was appointed professor at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts, and shortly before his death he was awarded the gold medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. A child of noucentista perfectionism and a great draughtsman, Rebull worked with great technical mastery and confidence in the path to follow. His sculpture is direct and anti-rhetorical, based on a serene and essential vision of reality. His style can be defined as a reencounter with the source of classicism, from which he never copies the consequences. He is represented in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Reina Sofia National Centre, Barcelona City Hall, the Monastery of Montserrat and the Palau de la Música Catalana, among other centres.

JOAN REBULL (Reus, 1899 - Barcelona, 1981). "La Pubilla". 1965. Carrara marble. Signed on the side. He made a version of this work for the Caixa de Pensions de Reus (1965, marble, 190 x 78 x 64 cm), also signed on the left side and undated. This version is the property of the Municipal Institute of Museums of Reus. Bibliography: -Rebull, 1974. -Virreina, 1982. -L'escultura de Joan Rebull", J. Corredor Matheos, ref.215. Size: 102 x 35 x 30 cm. Joan Rebull made two versions or copies of "La Pubilla", both in Carrara marble: the one shown here, and the one that in 2016 became the property of the Municipal Institute of Museums of Reus (thanks to a donation from the Fundació La Caixa), the year in which it was exhibited in the foyer of the Palau Municipal. The master from Reus made this sculpture in 1965. The ductility he imprints on marble is remarkable here. It magnificently expresses the lucid observation of the distinguished critic Cirici Pellicer about an art capable of "transforming the particular, characteristic and ephemeral into typical and eternal". Indeed, we are looking at a modern peasant woman wrapped in a spiritual aura that brings her close to allegory. While the pleated skirt and attitude offer a realistic image of a contemporary young woman, the soft, Greek-influenced forms give her a timeless dramaturgy. Rebull diverts the meaning of "pubilla" (a Catalan name for the eldest daughter destined to receive the family inheritance) to allude to the one who receives the fruits of the earth. This is the inheritance that the "pubilla" values and, at the same time, will bequeath to her descendants. It is an almost political claim that defined the commitment of this great sculptor to his land. Considered to be the most outstanding Catalan sculptor of his time, Joan Rebull began in the world of sculpture in his native city, under the guidance of the sculptor Pau Figueres. In 1915 he moved to Barcelona to begin his artistic training at the La Lonja School of Fine Arts, while at the same time working in the workshop of the marble worker Bechini. Est: €6,000 - €8,000

JOAN REBULL (Reus, 1899 - Barcelona, 1981). "Girl". Stone sculpture. Signed on the lower right-hand side. Measurements: 62 x 27 x 20 cm. This work is an eloquent example of the most personal work of Joan Rebull, an artist who develops a language with classical aesthetic roots, based on the principles of nobility, beauty and proportion, which nevertheless uses an idealisation and a synthesis of forms in accordance with the avant-garde and not with the models of Classical Antiquity. Thus, we are faced with a serene, balanced child portrait with a certain immutable, archaic and almost sacred character in the perfection of its proportions and structural lines, which establishes a bridge between the ancient idols and avant-garde plastic research. Considered to be the most outstanding Catalan sculptor of his time, Joan Rebull began in the world of sculpture in his native city under the guidance of the sculptor Pau Figueres. Model made for the collection of Joan Merlí, as stated on the back of the figure. Painted wooden base. Measurements: 21 x 12 x 11 cm (figure); 6 x 18 x 14 cm (base). Joan Merli Pahissa (1901-1995) publisher, collector, art dealer and art critic was one of the most influential and relevant figures of the Catalan culture of the years between the wars, but, in spite of the consideration his work enjoyed at the time both in Catalonia and in South America, where he settled after the Civil War, today his name is quite unknown to us. Joan Merli was the dealer of the sculptor Joan Rebull. Considered to be the most outstanding Catalan sculptor of his time, Joan Rebull began in the world of sculpture in his native city, under the guidance of the sculptor Pau Figueres. Measurements: 136 cm (height). Joan Rebull offers us a work of great interest for its beauty and deep meaning, an allegory to the Mediterranean Sea inspired by the theme of the Birth of Venus, although renewed with the delicate and free contribution that catapulted Joan Rebull to the top of the sculptural panorama of the 20th century. The work responds to the cultural context around 1900, when some identity claims in France, Italy and Catalonia proposed to return to the origins and recover the Mediterranean sense of our culture. Thus, we are faced with a beautiful and serene female nude that has its roots in the classical world, although it also connects with the avant-garde, thanks to a work of purification and formal synthesis that strips the work of any accessory element, except for the fish that the figure drops between her hands, looking for the essence, that which is immutable, which unites the archaic world with the present of the twentieth century. Considered as the most outstanding Catalan sculptor of his time, Joan Rebull began in the world of sculpture in his hometown, with the sculptor Pau Figueres. In 1915 he moved to Barcelona to begin his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts of La Lonja, while working in the workshop of the marble artist Bechini. In 1916 he made his individual debut with an exhibition at the Centro de Lectura in Reus, and the following year he founded, together with other artists, the group known as "Els Evolucionistes", which aimed to replicate the Catalan Noucentisme. In 1921 he traveled to London and Paris, cities where he was particularly impressed by the ancient art housed in their museums. Between 1926 and 1929 he lived in the French capital and took part in the Salon des Indépendants, although he also sent works to exhibitions in Barcelona.
