        Suhaidi Razi (b. 1977) The Hamburger, 2016

        Est: RM6,000 - RM10,000

Suhaidi's individuality is expressed through a surreal, fantastical world. The work contemplates the hamburger as a universal fast food. In this fast rapid changing society, the environment is always destroyed in the name of development for a better future. The presence of industrial waste could be observed within the layers of the hamburger. His use of forms and bright colours give the work a dynamic effect. Suhaidi Razi graduated with a BFA in 1999 and MFA in 2005 at UiTM Shah Alam. He has won several prizes but the major one is the Nokia Art Award in 2002. A forceful arrangement of objects including picture frames, carpet, textiles, books, vessels, animal skeletal specimens, and flying birds demonstrate Suhaidi's impeccable skill. Meanwhile, a flying duck across the canvas exudes the feeling of motion, juxtaposed with the still objects. The overall palette is rustic and earthy, with luxurious red accents found in the textiles. Exploring issues of nature and memory, this work displays Suhaidi's reinterpretation of the still life genre. Suhaidi Razi graduated with a BFA in 1999 and MFA in 2005 at UiTM Shah Alam. Est: RM7,000 - RM12,000

This piece depicts a machine-powered horse, and a vulture tearing off its flesh, scavenging a meal. Judging from the backdrop — a ferris wheel and a circus tent (reminiscent of old memories) — and the mechanical horse's get-up, it would seem that the horse was built for entertainment purposes, dressed up as a clown (like a fool), to please the crowd. The diary sketches (inside the wooden frame at the bottom) of the skeleton and laughing face further enhanced the effect. Suhaidi Razi graduated with a BFA in 1999 and MFA in 2005 at UiTM Shah Alam. Suhaidi Razi (b. Sarawak, 1977) Whale In My Playground, 2017

        Est: RM8,000 - RM14,000

One’s childhood holds precious memories and can perhaps cement sibling relationships that endure adulthood. Although there are more modern toy contraptions like the Batman figure, perhaps a blown-up balloon, and the rocking horse (horse is a recurrent theme in his work), there is no sign of any computerised gadgets, not even the ubiquitous handphones that have become de rigueur with kids nowadays. The artist Suhaidi Razi reflects on his sons forging relationships through studies and play, which could well serve as lessons later in life. As a cautionary device, probably the floating whale with the smirking look represents the bugbear obstacles that may put character and blood ties to the test. Whatever it is, one must face and overcome the challenges and obstacles in life. Suhaidi excelled when he clinched the Major Prize in the Nokia Art Awards in 2002. He also won the Grand / Major Prizes in the Pesta Anggerik, Shah Alam (Life Drawing, 2004); Traditional Malay House (Malacca, 2008); Historical Painting in Pahang (2002), Malacca (2005), Johor (2004, 2008) and Terengganu (2009); Terengganu Nature (2006) and Craft Design (2008) apart from more than a dozen Minor Awards in various competitions. He obtained his MFA from the Universiti ITM in 2003-2005, and BFA in 1995-1999.

This piece depicts a machine-powered horse, and a vulture tearing off its flesh, scavenging a meal. Judging from the backdrop — a ferris wheel and a circus tent (reminiscent old memories) — and the mechanical horse’s get-up, it would seem that the horse was built for entertainment purposes, dressed up as clown (like a fool), to please the crowd. The diary sketches (inside the wooden frame at the bottom) of skeleton and laughing face further enhanced the effect. Suhaidi Razi graduated with a BFA in 1999 and MFA in 2005 at UiTM Shah Alam. He has won several prizes but the major one is the Nokia Art Award in 2002. He also won the Major Award in the Pahang painting competition (2003), Johor Historical Building (2004) and numerous Minor Awards, Grand Prize in Life-drawing (Pesta Anggerik, Galeri Shah Alam, 2004), Traditional Malay House Design (Malacca, 2006), Historical Painting Johor (2008), Nature Terengganu (2008), Historical Terengganu (2009). His first solos Rainforest and A Sanctuary, were held at the Batang Ai Longhouse Resort and KL Hilton respectively in 1997. Then came Passage at NN Gallery in 2011, Dream Pipes at Galeri Chandan in 2012, Imagine The Imagination at White Box Publika in 2013, and Paradox (organised by Curate Henry Butcher) at Galeri Prima in 2017. He was selected for a solo show booth in Art Expo Malaysia Plus (2017).

SUHAIDI RAZI (b. 1977) GUARD, 2012, Metal and fiber

        Est: RM35,000 - RM60,000

As the title Guard implies, this imposing statue morphs from the ancient protector of yore, a qilin (always in pair) perhaps or a Ganesha talisman, or more appropriately to the context and structure of this Guard here studded with armour of polished and reforged metal scraps, some kind of medieval knight, albeit with a more futuristic surrealistic touch. The metals are meticulously welded to create this gigantic guard, providing a sense of secure yet instilling fear (the clown mask on hand) at the same time. We hide behind many masks, and in doing so, trapped ourselves in fear of being found out. How will our protector be, in this 21st Century, in an Era of the Disbelievers and the Internet Generation? Can the weaponry of spanner, axe and shield suffice in safeguarding our lives, our limbs? Or is this just a modern scarecrow, that serves little practical purpose, not even as decoration? We are living in restless times when the only certainty is uncertainty.Suhaidi Razi graduated with a BFA in 1999 and MFA in 2005 at UiTM Shah Alam. SUHAIDI RADI (b. 1977) GOAT IN BLUE, 2013

        Est: RM7,000 - RM11,000

If you see a proliferation of goats in Suhaidi Razi’s oeuvre, it’s probably not because it’s his favourite animal subject, but that they happen to be there – in his goat farm, some 3 acres of it, in Kelantan, which also happens to be his home studio and his mother’s homestead. Like Raduan Man, with a farmstead studio. He also rears kampung chicken and his farm also has horses. And the term, blue goat, may refer to the mountain ram in the Himalayas called bharal or naur native to India, Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet. Whether Suhaidi’s goat is actually blue (a Smurf goat?), it doesn’t seem so from the work, though the background is positively blue. But blue or otherwise, a doughnut is not something anyone would want to tempt a goat with, that’s why the nonchalant look, and it could well have snarled: “Sheesh!” (Goat In Blue is illustrated in the catalogue of Suhaidi Razi’s exhibition, Imagine The Imagination, 2013)Suhaidi graduated with a BFA in 1999 and MFA in 2005 at the Universiti ITM in Shah Alam. SUHAIDI RAZI (b. 1977) THE TRAVELLER, 2015, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM4,500 - RM7,000

What price memories? A jumble of inconsequential images that might or might not mean anything to anyone else, and littered with objects possessed or hankered for? The Traveller is a hodge-podge of things, mostly old dating to a time of paraffin lamps. The Union Jack box and the Coca Cola advertisement hints at the traveller’s Western leaning. The YOW tag, in airport code, in the handle of the old-fashioned suitcase refers to Ottawa, and what in blazes is the person or persons in the painted story doing in Ottawa? Whatever the clues or secrets, the skull looking out, facing right seems to be sniggering, or is it gritting its teeth? “A work of art must be able to entice its viewers to think, not only to acquire a higher understanding of its visible form but also of its deeper meaning,” the artist had averred. This work was shown in the Paradox exhibition at Galeri Prima, Kuala Lumpur, in March 2017.

        SUHAIDI RAZI (b. 1977) IRON HORSE 1, 2015, Metal

        Est: RM6,000 - RM9,000

Suhaidi Razi, whose home-studio is his mother’s 3-acre farm homestead in Kelantan, has a special fascination for horses, like Marino Marini (1901-1980). In Henry Butcher’s Nov 6, 2016 auction, his horse sculpture sold for RM9,520, some three times over its low estimate! He had also constructed a large installation of a metal horse carriage which was shown in his Imagine The Imagination exhibition, organised by NN Gallery, at the White Box Publika, Kuala Lumpur, in 2013. This iron horse sculpture was shown in the Paradox exhibition at Galeri Prima, Kuala Lumpur, in March 2017.Suhaidi is a champion of art awards. Apart from the Major Prize in the Nokia Art Awards in 2002, he also had Grand/Major Prizes in the Pesta Anggerik, Shah Alam (Life Drawing, 2004); Traditional Malay House (Malacca, 2008); Historical Painting in Pahang (2002), Malacca (2005), Johor (2004, 2008) and Terengganu (2009); Terengganu Nature (2006) and Craft Design (2008). He has also won more than a dozen Minor Awards in various competitions. He obtained his MFA from the Universiti ITM in 2003-2005, and BFA in 1995-1999. He has come a long way since his first solo, Rainforest, held at the Batang Ai Longhouse resort in Sarawak in 1997.

SUHAIDI RAZI (b. 1977) Lucky Strike, 2011, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM4,000 - RM6,000

Suhaidi Razi has a strange fascination for horses, which make up a large part of his creative expressions on canvas/paper and in bronze and found objects. His relocation back to the countryside in Kelantan, far from the madding crowd, has reforged his affinity with land. His works, though, ironically do rely on technology. Like Raduan Man, he keeps his equanimity by sustaining on agro-culture like goat-farming and rearing ayam kampung. While George Stubb rendered the faithful steed in full, Suhaidi prefers to dwell only on the head.Suhaidi received his Master’s in Fine Art Technology at the University Mara Institute of Technology in 2003-2005, and BA in 1995-99.He won the Grand Prize in the Traditional Malay Design competition in Malacca (2006), Historical Painting at Galeri Seni Johor (2008) and Historical Event in Terengganu. His Major Award accolades were in Nokia Arat Award (2002), Johor Historical Building (2004), Terengganu Museum Craft Design (2007) and the Pahang art competition in 2003 (Minor in 2001), while his Minor Awards were too many to mention. Since his first solo at the Rainforest in Sarawak in 1997, his recent Imagine The Imagination at White Box Publika organised by NN Gallery in 2013 was perhaps the grandest.

You must have been gobsmacked when you stumbled upon Suhaidi Razi’s huge horse-carriage made up entirely of found steel objects in his grandest exhibition, Imagine The Imagination, organised by the NN Gallery, at the White Box Publika, Kuala Lumpur, in 2013. This horse work using construction detritus like steel plates (cut) and iron rods, with elongated thin limbs reminiscent somewhat of Salvador Dali’s Temptation of St Anthony, is a regal pose of grace and elegance.Suhaidi received his Master’s in Fine Art Technology at the University Mara Institute of Technology in 2003-2005, and BA in 1995-99.He won the Grand Prize in the Traditional Malay Design competition in Malacca (2006), Historical Painting at Galeri Seni Johor (2008) and Historical Event in Terengganu.
