NICOLÁS RAURICH Y PETRE (Barcelona, 1871 - 1945). "Hillside". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. With label of the Sala Parés on the back. Measurements: 40 x 40 cm; 70 x 70 cm (frame). Nicolás Raurich was formed in the School of Fine Arts of the Lonja de Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Caba, Rigalt and Meifrén. Already in 1892 he participated in an exhibition at the Sala Parés, and also at the National Gallery of Madrid. In 1894 he obtains his first official success with the gold medal of the IV Centenary of the Discovery of Puerto Rico. He extended his studies in Rome, between 1895 and 1899, where he became friends with Enric Serra. He completed his studies in London and Munich, and after a short stay in Paris he traveled through Castile, influenced by the Generation of '98 and his taste for the arid landscape of the highlands. In 1910 he participated in the first exhibition of Les Arts i els Artistes in Barcelona, and in 1919 in the Exposition d'Art Espagnol in Paris, where the Musée du Luxembourg (future Musée d'Orsay) acquired one of his works. As an illustrator his collaborations in the weekly magazine "Blanco y Negro" stand out. He sent his works to numerous national and international exhibitions, and was awarded in the National of Madrid (honorable mention in 1892 and second medal in 1897), with honorable mention in the Salon of the Society of French Artists in Paris in 1900, and first medal in the International Exhibitions of Athens (1903) and Barcelona (1907), as well as in the Arts and Industries of Mexico, in 1910. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

In this painting, Raurich develops with great fluency in the capture, with juicy brushstroke, of the lazy lights of the autumn reflecting on the toasted leaves and the ancient stone of the cloister. Nicolás Raurich studied at the School of Fine Arts of La Lonja in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Caba, Rigalt and Meifrén. Already in 1892 he participated in an exhibition at the Sala Parés, and also at the National Gallery of Madrid.
