George E. Raum (American, b. 1846), "The Sphinx of Egypt in Moonlight," 1896, oil on canvas, signed lower right, canvas: 45.25"h x 64.5"w, overall: 56.75"h x 75.75"w. Note: Colonel Raum was born in Virginia and later resided in New York and Berkeley/San Francisco, California. Raum travelled extensively in Egypt in the late 19th century. A similar painting by the artist titled, "The Sphinx (1896)," was gifted to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and is part of their permanent collection
