      Signed P. Raud (1865 - 1930), Oil on Canvas

      Est: $500 - $750

The artist, Paul Raud was known to paint in this manner. Raud was an artist from Estonia, a small country in northern Europe. He was associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting and noted for portrait commissions. In 1899 he spent time working with Ilya Repin, a realist painter from Russia and the most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century. After World War I, Raud became a drawing instructor at the Tallinn Institute of Commerce in Estonia and ended his career at the Tallinn School of Industrial Art. His portraits and landscapes are in museums throughout Europe. This painting is a departure from the portraits Raud was noted for. It shows five horses galloping across an open field and was probably done in the early 1900’s. The painting is signed “P. Raud” in the lower right corner. There is light blue in-painting in the top cloud on the right and some overpainting to the belly of the chestnut brown horse on the left, possibly to expand the size of the belly and give a more accurate sense of what the horse’s belly looked like when the horse was at a full gallop. The muted gilt frame is 39 in. wide x 23 in. high, and the sight size is 31 in. wide x 15 3/8 in. high.
