Vintage Ferrotyped Gelatin silver print, 9 3/4 x 7 5/8 inches. A black mother and child are rendered in wonderful shadows or reflections. This well exemplifies Rathenau’s artistry and the influence of the artists whose works he published. “New York. Coney Island” is written in pencil verso, with the PIX stamp. A ferrotyped print has a highly glossed surface that makes it better as a source for publishing. It often has a more attractive higher contrast appearance than a regular glossy gelatin silver print.

Ernst Rathenau (1897 – 1986), Jewish Sunday Market, Amsterdam, ca.1935, printed later. A large early record player and hairstyle dummies are among the object for sale. The snipe reads in part, “in pre –World War II days, most Amsterdam Jews perished during Nazi occupation of Holland.” The nephew of the Weimar Republic statesman Walther Rathenau, Ernst was a publisher of important catalogs of artist’s works. He emigrated to the US in 1938, where he continued to photograph along with operating a successful bookshop in NYC. Original snipe and Rathenau’s PIX credit stamp are on the verso.
