A Young Workman at a Stretching Frame (1890-1891) Oil on canvas, 33.1 x 26.3 cm Provenance: - Artist's studio Gerard Post Greve (1913-1990) - Collection of the artist Arnold Koning (1860-1945), Voorthuizen - Auction Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 17 October 2006, lot 130 - Private collection, the Netherlands Literature: J.W. Brouwer a.o., Anthon van Rappard. Companion & Correspondent of Vincent van Gogh. His Life and All his Works, Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, Amsterdam/Maarssen 1974, pp. 117, 126-127 Note: Anthon van Rappard was a student of Lourens Alma Tadema and a mentor and friend of Vincent van Gogh. After four years their friendship was eventually ended by a misunderstanding in their correspondence. The letters Van Gogh wrote to Van Rappard during their correspondence in the years 1881-1885 are a main source for Van Gogh's biography and work. This painting was executed during the period in which Van Rappard worked in the Préviniaire cotton-dyeing plant in Haarlem. The expressive, simple forms were the focus point of the artist when painting individual workman. Today, Van Rappard's works are rare due to his short life and can be found in the collections of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rottetrdam, Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle and Centraal Museum in Utrecht. Compare the present lot with a similar work in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo (inv. no. KM 105.377). THE BLIND BRUSHMAKER 24,5 by 17 cm. oil on canvas LITERATURE J.W. Brouwer a.o., Anthon van Rappard. Companion & Correspondent of Vincent van Gogh. His life and all his works, Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, Amsterdam/Maarsen 1974, p. 26, pp. 105-107 J. Meerdink, 'Een Zeister vriend van Vincent van Gogh. De schilder Anthon van Rappard', Seijst. Bull. ter Bevordering van de Kennis van de Geschiedenis van Zeist, 1990, p. 41 NOTE From 1880 till 1885 Van Rappard was a close friend of Vincent van Gogh, who shared his artistic ideas. In 1882 Van Rappard visited the Institute of the Blind in Utrecht, where he portrayed the inhabitants with great simplicity, avoiding any trace of the anecdotal. 'He studies the figure carefully, not just as a touch of color (...) but more seriously in its shape and structure', Vincent van Gogh wrote admiringly. About six years later, in 1888-1891, Van Rappard returned to Utrecht and painted a series of blind brushmakers and basket weavers, evidencing his great talent as a portraitist. The present lot is a fine example of this.

A YOUNG WORKMAN AT A STRETCHING FRAME A YOUNG WORKMAN AT A STRETCHING FRAME 45 by 25 cm. oil on canvas LITERATURE J.W. Brouwer a.o., Anthon van Rappard. Companion & Correspondent of Vincent van Gogh. His life and all his works, Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, Amsterdam/Maarsen 1974, p. 126 NOTE The present lot was executed in 1890-1891, when Van Rappard found his motives in the Préviniaire cotton-dyeing plant in Haarlem. He met the owner of the plant at the art society 'Kunst zij ons Doel' in Haarlem. In his sketches of individual workmen, Van Rappard strove for simple, expressive forms, as he would do throughout his career. The series of workmen is generally regarded as his best work and a unique documentation of 19th century Dutch industry. Most of the works in this series are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The present lot is one of the rare examples that stayed in private hands. Compare the present lot to a painting of the same subject in the Centraal Museum, Utrecht (inv.no. 7634/10). Several studies for the present lot are preserved in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
