Rappaport Provenance: Treadway-Toomey Gallery, USA; Private property, Vienna SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE °€ 600 - 1200 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE °€ 600 The Austrian-American artist Fred Rappaport first studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and then went on to study medicine at the University of Vienna. As a Jewish student, he had to leave not only the university but also the country in 1938 and fled to the USA, where he continued his medical studies in Chicago and began further studies in art. He recorded the tragic story of his escape in his autobiography “Farewell to Vienna”. In Chicago, Rappaport concentrated more on his artistic work again. He attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts from 1942 to 1943 and the University of Illinois. After completing his studies, he pursued art therapy at the Chicago State Hospital and the Veterans Administration Hospital. Here he was responsible for some innovations in psychiatric art therapy. In the 1950s and 1960s he developed stylistically towards abstract art. Rappaport died in Chicago in 1989. His works are now represented in the Jerusalem Museum of Art, the Illinois State Museum and the Spertus Museum, among others. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
