Biography: William Tylee Ranney, is best remembered for his paintings depicting the American West and the opening of the American frontier, as well as sporting art and portraiture. Born in Connecticut, he was apprenticed to a tinsmith in Fayetteville, North Carolina after his sea-captain father was lost at sea. He joined the Texas army in 1836 to fight for independence against Mexico, but in 1838 returned to the Northeast, where he exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design. He traveled back and forth between North Carolina and New York for a time and advertised himself as a portrait painter in 1843. [The portrait being offered in this auction may date from about this time]. By 1853 Ranney had built a studio in Hoboken, NJ and was producing paintings depicting the opening of the American frontier. His successful career was cut short in 1857 when he died of consumption. att. William Ranney (NY/NJ, 1813-1857), On the Wing

        Est: $5,000 - $10,000

oil on canvas, unsigned, a stencil to verso reads "From / A S Robinson's / Looking Glass Portrait / & Picture Frame / Manufactors / 910 Chesnut St. Philada" and "Julius Scholz / No. 115 S. 8th Street / Philada," later frame. SS 31.75 x 45 in.; DOA 35 x 48 in. In addition to the signed copy of On the Wing exhibited at the annual exhibition of the National Academy of Design in 1850, now in a private collection, there are at least three other unsigned copies attributed to Ranney. One of these copies bears the same stencil for the artist supply store of Julius Scholz as exhibited on the present painting. However, that painting does not include the stencil for A. S. Robinson of Philadelphia, a prominent gallery on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. On the Wing was met with much acclaim and was distributed by lottery to John Brodhead of Philadelphia, PA. As Ranney was known to have painted speculatively for art-unions and galleries, it is conceivable that he painted multiple copies of his most well known composition. In 1857 an auction by Thomas & Sons of Philadelphia of the stock of Mr. A. S. Robinson at his store, No. 910 Chestnut Street, included one painting by Mr. Ranney titled Prairie Hunter. The auction catalogue describes the painting as "a fine specimen of an artist who has won fame by his skill in depicting similar scenes." Further support for the attribution is that this painting does not feature the "corrected" ears and addition of the flock of ducks as depicted in the engraving by Charles Burt. Hassrick, The Art of William Ranney with a Catalogue of His Works (Wyoming: Buffalo Bill Historical Center, 2006), pp. 174, color illus. Tories with a Prisoner belongs to a group of about eight paintings of the Revolutionary War period created by Ranney in the 1850s. The three mounted men, Tories loyal to King George III of England, escort a member of the Continental Forces who stands stoically while his weeping wife and child look on. The cruelty of the captors is revealed in their leering expressions and the burning house in the background. Such works, in which historical scenes were treated in a genre format, were intended to make history come alive for general audiences at a time when there was a concern that the stories of the nation's formative years would be forgotten. Tories with a Prisoner was the work of this title in Ranney's memorial exhibition, held at the National Academy of Design in 1858. Although different in format, the image relates to Ranney's The Tory Escort (1857, 36 x 35 inches, private collection), for which it may be a highly finished study. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC

*William T. Ranney (1813-1857) revolutionary militia crossing a river signed W. RanN0 [sic] and dated 1854 on saddle blanket, l.c. oil on canvas 36 1/4 by 50 1/4 in. (92.1 by 127.6cm.) While the subject of the present painting is currently known, it has for maN0 years been identified as Marion Crossing the Peedee. According to Linda Bantel, this painting does not appear to be related to Ranney's painting of that title in the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, but may depict another incident from the life of General Francis Marion. Marion was a popular figure in 19th century America and in the 1840s a new biography of Marion and William Cullen Bryant's poem "Song of Marion's Men" celebrated the achievements of the Revolutionary War hero. Linda Ayres and Jane Myers write, "One of the romantic heroes lionized [during the 19th century] was General Francis Marion, a South Carolinian who left his family to lead a group of irregular troops agains the British. Marion, who used his vast knowledge of the lowlands to his advantage in surprise attacks on Tory camps, was perhaps better known as 'the Swamp Fox' " (American Paintings: Selections from the Amon Carter Museum, Birmingham, Alabama, 1986, p. 34). Ranney had a particular interest in and admiration for the heroes of the ante-bellum South, having spent much of his youth in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In addition to Marion Crossing the Peedee, the artist painted several other works with southern themes including The Battle of Cowpens, Daniel Boone and His Companions Discovering Kentucky and The Virginia Wedding. This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's work.
