JOHANN MATTHIAS RANFTL (Vienna 1804 - 1854 Vienna) Family trip, 1845 oil/canvas 39,2 x 31,6 cm signed Ranftl, dated 1845 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 2400 - 4000 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 2400 Johann Matthias Ranftl was an Austrian painter and graphic artist. From 1817 he attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with Johann Baptist Lampi and Anton Petter. On a study trip through Switzerland in 1819 and then through Germany, Ranftl decided to devote himself to landscape painting. After his return to Vienna, he became a student of Johann Peter Krafft at the Vienna Academy. In 1826 he had his first successful academy exhibition with a portrait and a history painting. In 1826 Ranftl went to Russia, where he stayed in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. He gained access to the court and painted numerous portraits as well as a cycle of illustrations for Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. After his return, Ranftl created altarpieces and life-size royal portraits for the county hall in Varazdin (today Croatia). From 1831 Ranftl lived permanently in Vienna. In 1836 he accompanied the Austrian ambassador Prince Paul Esterházy to London. In 1849 Ranftl became a full member of the Vienna Academy. Johann Matthias Ranftl was a Viennese Biedermeier painter. His subject matter ranged from landscape painting to portraits, historical and religious altarpieces, and genre painting, for which he is still best known today. After 1831, he mainly turned to the genre during his time in Vienna. Pictures from the countryside and scenes from Vienna were created. A special feature was Ranftl's preference for depicting dogs, which made him known as the “dog painter” and “dog Raphael”. In his last years, Ranftl was intensively involved in printmaking experiments and invented a galvanographic technique, which is named after him as Ranftl's process. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
