His works convey the hills and gorges surrounding Elgee Cliffs, also known as Warlawoon Country, home to the rock wallabies that live around camping areas and near waterholes. Images of cliffs, hills, rocks, waterholes, and meeting places appear as distillations of prominent features in this landscape. The circles may be a waterhole, a place or a cave, while the rectangle, may be a stockyard or hills. He conveys this language of floodwater, both natural and man-made elements by mixing two colours, wet on wet, across the surface to create the gestural strokes and rhythm of the brush – this is a way to spiritually represent earth, wind, fire, and water. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

RR 6 2006-77 PROVENANCE Jirrawun Arts, Wyndham, Western Australia William Mora Galleries, Melbourne (gallery stamp verso) Private collection, Melbourne EXHIBITED Jirrawun Arts in associastion with William Mora Galleries at Melbourne Art Fair, Melbourne, 2 – 6 August 2006 (illus. in exhibition catalogue p. 21)  ESSAY Rammey Ramsey began painting for Jirrawun Arts at the beginning of the millennium where his paintings came to prominence when included in a number of group exhibitions at commercial galleries alongside contemporaries such as Paddy Bedford, Freddie Timms and Hector Jandany. A senior Gija man of Jungurra skin, Ramsey was born at Old Greenvale Station (now part of Bow River Station) but as a young boy lived at Warlawoon, his ancestral country located to the west of Bedford Downs near Elgee Cliffs in the remote East Kimberley region of Western Australia. For much of his life he worked as a stockman on various surrounding Kimberley cattle stations, including Bedford Downs, Lansdowne Station and Bow River Station. Ramsey combined stock work with his collective knowledge of Gija lore and ceremony. He came to painting in his later years, but art was always an essential part of his life through ceremony. Warlawoon Country, 2006 was first shown with William Mora Galleries at the Melbourne Art in 2006 and depicts the country of his mother and father. Warlawoon is also Ramsey’s Gija name and the main subject of his painting, portraying both a personal and collective history, and a memory of place. Notably in 2006, another of Ramsey’s work was included in the exhibition,  Jirrawun in the House: A Contemporary Experience from the East Kimberley, held at Parliament House, Canberra. © Rammey Ramsey/Copyright Agency 2024

When the strong wind comes blowing from the east it throws dust everywhere. The dust floats when the wind blows from the east. People used to walk along in the hot sun long ago. When they had been walking in the hot sun, never mind, they would bathe in the water and start off again in the cool time of the day. It is a place for the rainbow snake, the dangerous one. In olden days just anyone could not go there. In early days if strange people went there the people who belonged there had to perform a welcoming ceremony, putting water from the country on them (the strangers). Lots of people would come to dance Joonba style song and dance. Then they would split up and leave. Those two (my parents) used to go around there. They lived there." © Rammey Ramsey/Copyright Agency 2023

Rammey Ramsey started painting for Jirrawun Arts in the central Kimberley in 2000. He was in his mid sixties by then, but his involvement in traditional ceremony had already made painting and art-making a central part of his life. He is a senior Gija man of Jungurra skin and his country is Warwaloon, west of Bedford Downs. This country provides the subject matter for most of his works. Though already in his senior years, Ramsey became renowned as a trailblazer of the modern Aboriginal art movement. Unhampered in his capacity for innovation, he draws his inspiration from the complex network of Dreaming narratives that thread through the vast tracts of once-shared land. The ceremonial exchanges that occurred seasonally between specific tribal and language groups has fostered a culturally diverse, yet collective perspective. This exchange plays out uniquely in Ramsey's work.

Ramsey is a senior Gija lawman who, like his contemporary Paddy Bedford, began painting relatively late in life for Jirrawun Aboriginal Arts Corporation. A circle may be a waterhole, a place or a cave, a rectangle a stockyard or hills. He conveys this language of floodwater, natural and man-made elements by mixing two colours, wet on wet, across the surface of the board to create the gestural strokes and rhythm of the brush – spiritually a way to represent earth, wind, fire, and water. According to Ramsey 'When the strong wind comes blowing from the east it throws dust everywhere. It is a place for the rainbow snake, the dangerous one. In early days if people went there, the local people had to perform a welcoming ceremony, putting water from the country on them (the strangers). Lots of people would come to dance: Joonba style. My parents lived there.’

Rammey Ramsey (1935-) Rocky Bar (Warlawoon Country) 2010

            Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Rammey began painting for Jirrawun Arts in 2000 and later joined the artists working at the Warmun Art Centre where this work was created in 2010 to raise funds following the devastating flood through the community that destroyed much of the art centre stock and equipment. Here, the flood picks up and mixes with the fine red ‘pindan’ dust colouring the floodwater pink. Ramsey paints the hills and gorges surrounding Elgee Cliffs, home to the Rock Wallabies that live around camping areas and near waterholes. Images of cliffs, hills, rocks, waterholes, and meeting places appear as distillations of prominent features in this landscape. A circle may be a waterhole, a place or a cave, a rectangle a stockyard or hills. In this picture we see a stylised representation of large cliffs, the black area in the upper half of the picture, a water fall running down off the cliff to a water hole on a large river, camping places for Gija people in traditional times shown by the four circles and a modern road shown by the line across the bottom. The water hole there is a very good fishing place. Every year the artist and his dearest friend and relation Timmy Timms recently deceased used to muster in that country. He was with him all that time. The artist lived there for most of his life and knows the country intimately.'
