          • FRENCH & INDIAN WAR PORTRAIT OF LT. WILLIAM SNOW STEELE, CIRCA 1759.
            Dec. 10, 2024

FRENCH & INDIAN WAR PORTRAIT OF LT. WILLIAM SNOW STEELE, CIRCA 1759.

            Est: $5,000 - $10,000

ATTRIBUTED TO ALLAN RAMSAY (British, 1713-1784). "Portrait of Lieutenant William Snow Steele, circa 1759." Oil on canvas, 29 x 24 inches, within later gilt composition frame. Outside of his military career, the life of William Snow Steele (also spelled “Steel”) remains largely a mystery. He was a gentleman-volunteer attached to a regiment in Wolfe’s army at the siege of Quebec and was appointed an ensign in the 2nd Battalion of the "Royal Americans" or Regiment of Foot on 24 AUG 1759, his commission due a casualty vacancy in the regiment. Steele was wounded in action during the decisive British victory on the Plains of Abraham, 18 SEP 1759. He fought with the 2nd Battalion in the defense of Quebec and subsequent campaign against Montreal the following year and was promoted to lieutenant on 23 June 1760. He transferred to Captain George Coventry’s New York Independent Company on 12 December 1762, transferring again on 25 June 1763, this time into the 55th Regiment of Foot (thereby avoiding a retirement on half-pay with the reduction of the army with the coming of peace). He married Elizabeth Long (1746-1797) at Trinity Church in New York City on 16 January 1765, the license listing his birth year as 1740 (while his military records indicate 1742). His regiment was reduced and ordered back in England that same month, Steele remaining in New York as a half-pay officer. He was also the recipient of a military land grant of 2000 acres in Cumberland County along the Connecticut River, which was patented in 1770. The following year, the Common Council of New York City admitted “William Snow Steele Gent[leman was] as a “freeman of this Corporation” on 16 March 1771. William must have died sometime in the following two years, as his wife Elizabeth was listed as a widow in city records. While Steele’s scarlet uniform has the blue facings given to all “Royal” regiments, it is not necessarily that of the 60th, whose officers (at least in some battalions) had silver lace and buttons. Rather, it appears to be that worn from c. 1759 by officers of the 42nd or Royal Highland Regiment, with blue facings, gold lace and buttons, a fall-down collar, and buff (rather than scarlet) waistcoat. This would indicate that Steele most likely served as a gentleman-volunteer in the 42nd during 1759 and as such, wore the same uniform as an officer but devoid of aiguillette on right shoulder. This is probably why the artist painted Steele in profile to the left, rather than right proper (or a frontal view). By this means, his portrait would still be “current” since the aiguillette would not be seen should he be so fortunate as to be promoted in his parent unit. The portrait was presented to the Tontine Coffee House by his widow or possibly following her death in 1797. It remained there until the House was closed and its property sold at public auction in the 1830s. CONDITION: Lined in the 19th century; conserved in 2011, at which time the painting was cleaned, old varnish removed and replaced with synthetic resin varnish; minor scattered inpainting. Conservation report accompanies portrait. ADDENDUM: The frame is a late 18th century frame that has been with the portrait since at least the early or mid 19th century--if not original to the work. It has had subsequent restoration work done to it, as noted in the conservation report that accompanies the painting.

Provenance:Commissioned by or given to Henry, 5th Duke of Beaufort (1744-1803), Badminton, by 1796, By descent at Badminton House until sold;Sotheby's, London, 15th July 1992, lot 28. Literature: British Museum Add MS 6391, f.554, listed 1796. (Musgrave). A. Smart, Allan Ramsay - A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings 1999 p. 81. Admiral The Hon. Edward Boscawen (1711-1761) was a distinguished British naval officer. Boscawen was the third son of Hugh Boscawen, 1st Viscount Falmouth (1680-1734), and entered the Royal Navy at the age of 12. He rapidly ascended through the ranks, demonstrating his strategic acumen in important engagements during the War of Jenkins' Ear, the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years War. Beyond his military achievements, Boscawen held political roles, serving as a Member of Parliament and later as a Lord of the Admiralty. This portrait of Admiral Boscawen is the half-length autograph version painted by Allan Ramsay in 1758. The full-length version, which includes a French flag and maritime fortifications in the background, was recorded by Sir William Musgrave, 6th Baronet Musgrave of Hayton, as hanging at Badminton House in the collection of the Dukes of Beaufort. Musgrave noted that it had been painted by Ramsay 'soon after the taking of Louisbourg, Aug.19. 1758.' This half-length version was likewise described by the antiquary and proto- art historian in 1796 at Badminton as 'Admiral Boscawen 3 qr. by Ramsay.' Admiral Boscawen's younger daughter Elizabeth married Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort in 1766. This portrait depicts the sitter in his resplendent blue and gold uniform as a Rear Admiral of the Blue, a rank to which he was promoted after near annihilating the French fleet at Finisterre in 1747.Perhaps the greatest portrait painter in the history of Scotland, Allan Ramsay also played an instrumental role in establishing a national identity for British art. His precise and sensitive portraiture earned him widespread acclaim, aided by his prodigious intellectualism - he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1743 - and social flair which integrated him with an elite stratum of patrons. Amongst his friends and correspondents, he counted David Hume, Adam Smith, Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, Voltaire, and Rousseau. Dr Johnson reflected that there was no man 'in whose conversation there is more instruction, more information, and more elegance, than in Ramsay's. His ascension to Principal Painter to the King in 1767 promoted him amongst a prestigious cohort which included Anthony van Dyck, Peter Lely, Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Lawrence. The present elegant portrait possesses all of the grace and naturalness of Ramsay's work, employing many of the distinctive techniques he had developed over his career. The short feathery brushstrokes are concentrated in the lighter areas, juxtaposing the looser shadows. This has the effect of giving the sitter a luminous concreteness and depth, notably emphasised here in the artist's trademark contrasting of the front of the wig in brilliant light and its ribbon in shadow behind.

Sutherland sale, Christie's, 8 February 1929, lot 81 MacNicol, Glasgow c.1960 Private Collection Scotland Literature: Alistair Smart, Allan Ramsay: A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings, Yale University Press, 1999, p.142, no.289a Note: The prime version of this portrait is in the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh (NG2152). Allan Ramsay played an instrumental role in establishing a national identity for British art. His precise and sensitive portraiture earned him widespread acclaim, aided by his prodigious intellectualism and social flair which ingratiated him with an elite stratum of patrons; amongst his friends he counted David Hume, Adam Smith, Samuel Johnson and James Boswell (Dr Johnson reflected that there was no man ‘in whose conversation there is more instruction, more information, and more elegance, than in Ramsay’s’). His ascension to Principal Painter to the King in 1767 promoted him amongst a prestigious cohort which included Anthony van Dyck, Peter Lely, Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Lawrence. In this capacity, and under the prolific patronage of George III, Ramsay’s royal portraiture established an iconography that would define the monarch’s reign across the world for generations to come. The most pivotal commission of his career came from the 3rd Earl of Bute in 1757, who employed Ramsay to execute a full-length portrait of the Earl’s pupil George, the Prince of Wales (later King George III). The resulting likeness was deemed so satisfactory that George, in turn, commissioned a portrait of his teacher. Ramsay thus established a fruitful relationship with George, who would prove one of the most enthusiastic patrons of the arts since Charles I. Upon George’s 1761 Coronation he engaged Ramsay’s services as ‘One of his Majesty’s Painters in Ordinary’, his first charge being to produce a pair of resplendent full-length Coronation portraits of the King and Queen. The Lord Chamberlain’s Office required numerous copies of these paintings to be distributed to Ambassadors and Governors of the Old World and the New, a task that would occupy Ramsay and his studio assistants for the rest of his life. This portrait of Anne, Lady Inglis dates to earlier in Ramsay’s career when he made regular visits to his native Edinburgh to fulfil portrait commissions of eminent society figures. His talent for articulating his subject’s personality is evident in Anne’s twinkling eyes and knowing smile. During his lifetime Ramsay was particularly celebrated for his talent for painting women. When comparing his portraiture with that of the young Joshua Reynolds, Horace Walpole observed that the two painters could Scarce be rivals; their manners are so different. [Reynolds] is bold, and has a kind of tempestuous colouring, yet with dignity and grace; [Ramsay] is all delicacy. Mr Reynolds scarcely succeeds with women: Mr Ramsay is formed to paint them.

ALLAN RAMSAY (SCOTTISH 1713-1784) HALF-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF GEORGE III IN RED COAT WITH THE STAR AND RIBBON OF THE GARTER Oil on canvas, and a companion, a pair, Queen Charlotte Wearing a Scarlet Dress (76cm x 63.5cm (30in x 25in)) Qty: (2) Provenance: Miss K. Jones A. Ackermann & Son, Chicago Malcolm Innes Gallery, Edinburgh 1981 Private Collection, Scotland Exhibited: Musée Masséna, Nice, Les Anglais dans le Comte de Nice, 1934, no. 339 (lent by Jones) Literature: Alastair Smart, Allan Ramsay: A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings, Yale University Press, 1999, pp.90, 121, 86b and 193b Allan Ramsay played an instrumental role in establishing a national identity for British art. In around 1761-2 Ramsay recorded working on smaller pendant portraits showing King George and Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in profile ‘for the coinage’. George is presented in dignified regal splendour: he wears the star and ribbon of the Garter, and tucks his hand into his jacket causing its golden embroidery to glimmer in the light. Queen Charlotte is equally refined, draped all in lace with pearls affixed at her throat with a cream ribbon. Newly arrived from Germany, she rests her arm on the second volume of David Hume’s 1757 History of Britain, as if an assurance to her subjects of her preparedness for the British crown. The principal versions of these portraits were commissioned by the Earl of Bute at around the time he became Prime Minister, and further versions are rare, with only three listed in Alistair Smart’s catalogue of Ramsay’s works.

            Est: $600 - $750

London: circa 1745. Mezzotint. Printed on laid paper. In fair condition with the exception of being trimmed within the plate mark on all sides. Edges of sheet have been remargined. Image is slightly rubbed. Image size: 12 3/8 x 9 7/8 inches. Sheet size: 14 x 9 7/8 inches. A fine quality mezzotint portrait of Thomas Wentworth, Commander in Chief of the British forces in America. An excellent image by Alexander Van Haecken, younger brother of Joseph Van Haecken (Van Aken) who worked for some time as Ramsay's studio assistant, specialising in drapery. Ramsay, son of the poet of the same name, achieved a great level of success as a portrait painter, but after his appointment in 1767 as portrait painter to the King, he became, for a while, the most fashionable of them all. The present work is a print from one of the earlier works done before he received the royal seal of approval. .
