    Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Josef Karl Rädler Falkenau, Bohemia 1844 – 1917 Mauer-Öhling „O Mensch kann jede Stunde nutzen“ „Und die Bücher…“ Tempera, pen, watercolor & pencil on paper Painted on both sides 29,5 x 21,5 cm Provenance: Private collection Salzburg Gallery Altnöder Josef Karl Raedler was a master porcelain painter, laughing philosopher, co-reformer, court painter of Austria in Siam and Italy. Born in 1844 in Falkenau in Bohemia, died in 1917 in Mauer-Öhling, Lower Austria. The painter was the head of a global company before he was interned in a psychiatric hospital, probably at the instigation of his family. There, in 1897, he began to paint, write and draw on paper with watercolor, tempera, colored ink and India ink. The recognition of his work remained denied Raedler during his lifetime. The more than 1000 double-sided sheets were discovered in the 1960s, long after the artist's death, in the waste of a clinic and were exhibited for the first time by the Austrian psychiatrist Leo Navratil in 1994. Navratil also published a monograph accompanying this exhibition. Josef Karl Raedler was the first Art Brut painter in Austria.

    J. Rädler, 'Couple Eating', Germany, around 1960

    Est: €290 - €360

Oil on cardboard Germany, around 1960 Inscribed upper right 'J. Rädler' Humoristic-naïve scenery in the style of Austrian painter Josef Karl Rädler (1844-1917) Overall dimensions, framed: 27 x 33.5 cm Good condition This small size oil painting depicts a man and woman sitting at a table. Their proportions seem unusual stout. Both are eating from the same bowl of soup along with some bread. The artist might have been inspired by the naïve-humoristic watercolour drawings by Outsider-Artist Josef Karl Rädler (1844-1917), whose works were coincidently discovered in the 1960s. The painting is in a good condition showing only slight signs of age and wear such as framing marks. There are few tiny holes around the edges. The painting is inscribed upper right 'J. Rädler' and labeled on the back by the art supplier 'H. Schmincke & Co. Düsseldorf'. The image measures 21 x 27.5 cm. The overall dimensions are 27 x 33.5 cm.
