          May. 19, 2024

Bayu Utomo Radjikin (b. 1969) The Cock, 2005

          Est: RM5,000 - RM9,000

The canvas shows an assemblage of rooster, with fascinating yet familiar biomorphic forms. Dark, moody colours create an atmosphere of mystery across the canvas. The connection between the internal subconscious and reality through the organic forms is suggested through the image. Bayu virtually stormed into mainstream art when he captured the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition with his Bujang Berani sculpture bust in 1991, which bucked the trend of Islamic Art brought about by the Ayatollah Khomeiny fundamental messianic strictures of the mid-1980s. That year he also won a Special Award in the One World - No War competition organised by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall. In 1992, he again made a big impact with his Minor Award win in the prestigious Salon Malaysia 1991-1992. In the Malaysian level of the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards, Bayu won Honourable Mention twice, in 1994 and 1995. What is most dynamic about the artist is that he went on to establish the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award as a collaboration between his gallery, Hom Art Trans and Galeri Chandan, apart from regional art initiatives in art residencies and the Art Triangle bringing together outstanding young artists from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Bayu graduated with a BFA in UiTM in 1991. His solo exhibitions include Ada Apa Dengan Tengkorak, ChanHampe Galleries, Singapore & Hom Art Trans, KL (2015), Face Without Name, The Substation Gallery, Singapore (2011).

A spontaneous and unrestrained colour palette was devised to recreate the world of nature through expressive abstract forms. Colours, mark making, and lines were used to express the artist's inner reality and experience. Vibrant colours inclusive of red, and green form the underlying structure, creating a sense of rhythm. This work features a portrait of a Malay figure (self portrait?), composed with a mesh of calligraphic strokes that contain expressive forms, creating a dialogue between painting and text. The artist's work centres on the human figure and reflect spiritual wisdom through his figurative compositions. Dec. 05, 2021

Bayu Utomo Radjikin (b. Sabah, 1969) Puisi Jiwa III, 2007

          Est: RM45,000 - RM65,000

There is an element of theatricality, and play-acting, in Bayu Utomo Radjikin’s Puisi Jiwa Series (and also Infinity Series), a body of works after his return from a London sojourn in 2005-2006. His European exposures there have seen him translate mock Classicism into a vision of neo-Nusantara mythology and heroism into his new works. He likes to insert his persona into his canvas narrative, showing himself naked to the waist against a sinister dark-blue backdrop with vertical gravitational streaks, right hand outstretched and the left in defensive shield. He seems distracted by the wild flower commonly creeping up among the cracks of sidewalks. Through exaggerated hand gestures, body postures and facial expressions, Bayu seeks to impose a nebulous sense of past grandeur in overcoming teething modern-day struggles, both outer and the inner self. The work, among five in the series, was shown in the exhibition, ‘Mind The Gap: From KL to London and Back’ at Wei-Ling Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, in July 2007. Bayu Utomo Radjikin catapulted into Malaysian mainstream art when his Bujang Berani sculpture clinched the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition in 1991, the year he graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology. A Special Award in the One World – No War competition capped that year. In 1992, he clinched the Minor Award in the Salon Malaysia senior national competition. Bayu is also activist-gallerist, founding HOM Art Trans, and is a co-convener of the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award (MEAA), with rewards of art residencies at home and abroad.

          Est: RM5,000 - RM8,000

A spontaneous, passionate, and unrestrained colour palette was devised to recreate the world of nature through expressive abstract forms. Colours, gestural marks, and lines were explored to express the artist’s inner reality. Sensuous colours inclusive of red, black, and white overlap, and a sense of dynamism and energy is captured through the strokes. The hand palm on the bottom right intriguingly captures viewer's attention. Drawing on the subconscious mind to convey inner thoughts, Bayu creates an energetic composition that reflects contemporary issues. As the title suggests, this work depicts the pain that one goes through physically and mentally. However, there will always be sunshine after the rain, there will always be hope, one should never loss hope, tomorrow will be better! What does the modern hulubalang or pendekar entail in the Malay world of the 21st Century and the 3rd Millennium, with modern challenges and the computer gnomic code? Since his award-winning Bujang Berani sculpture in the 1991 Young Contemporary Artists Awards, Bayu Utomo Radjikin has inserted and projected his own persona, often singular and large and in pugilistic poses, into his repertoire. The ancient Malay martial art silat is linked to the early Malay civilisation and gains great popularity with the rise of Islam in the archipelago in the 15th century. In this Infinity Series, the warrior is depicted deep in thought and the headgear bears a patchwork of modern patterns, and more colourful. Bayu Utomo Radjikin followed up his 1991 Major Award with a Minor Award in the prestigious Salon Malaysia 1991-1992. In 2005, he won a Special Award in the One World – No War competition organised by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall. At the Malaysian level of the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards, Bayu won Honourable Mention twice, in 1994 and 1995. Off-canvas, Bayu established the HOM Art Trans gallery for young artists and set up the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award jointly with Galeri Chandan. He also initiated art residences, the MARS (Malaysian Art Archive and Research Support) and the Art Triangle of contemporary artists from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Bayu graduated with a BFA at the Universiti ITM in 1991, but he is best known as a founding member of the cult art collective Matahati. His auction record was set at the June 2013 Auction, for RM126,500.

          Est: RM25,000 - RM40,000

Bayu Utomo Radjikin’s approach in art-making in the Nineties was mainly sparked by current affairs with political and social commentary besides his signature large-scale self-portrait as warrior. Created in 1995, Gunman Guard, Mogadishu was perhaps inspired by the events of the time - the Battle of Mogadishu, which occurred in the capital of Somalia in 1993. Often referred to as Black Hawk Down, this battle was fought between Somali militiamen and United States forces aided by United Nations Operation in Somalia. Bayu Utomo Radjikin received his BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Universiti Teknologi Mara, Shah Alam. Besides working as a professional artist, Bayu is also a leading proponent of the local contemporary art industry. A founding member of House of Matahati (HOM), now known as HOM Art Trans - an independent art space comprising a gallery, studio facilities and art residency for emerging local artists - Bayu also initiated Malaysia Emerging Artists Award (MEAA) and Malaysian Art Archive and Research Support (MARS), a non-profit research support centre that compiles, preserves, and archives mainly printed materials related to Malaysian visual arts. Since the disbandment of Matahati collective, Bayu has established other artist groups such as The F Klub and Chetak Kolektif. Presently, Bayu’s artistic practice focuses on abstract expressionism.

Bayu Utomo Radjikin (b. 1969) Man Of War, 1990s

          Est: RM22,000 - RM38,000

In October 1994, one of the most politically riveting exhibitions called War Box, Lalang and Killing Tools was staged at, and sanctioned by, the National Art Gallery, albeit at its Creative Centre. It featured Bayu Utomo Radjikin, Wong Hoy Cheong and Raja Shahriman Azzidin. Bayu on the 1991 Persian Gulf War genocide, Wong on the 1987 political snuff-up Ops Lalang, and Raja Shahriman, with sharply pointed tools on the struggles and disciplining of self. Bayu employs both the painted stark images and print-media collage, on the hundreds of metric tons of chemical agents waged in the Gulf War as well as the Iran-Iraq War from 1980 to 1988. Both the fighting and the innocents, primarily women and children, had to wear gas masks to protect themselves from the tabun, mustard gas, VX and sarin packed in rockets and artillery shells. Man’s cruelty had reached new heights, what more with real-time warfare and butchery beamed onto living-room TVs. Bayu was deeply shaken by it. He was in the final-year in his art studies at the Mara Institute of Technology then. Bayu Utomo Radjikin is not only a celebrated artist from the cult Matahati art cooperative, now defunct, but also an activist as gallerist (HOM Art Trans), organiser of awards (MEAA), residencies for young artists and the regional Art Triangle exhibition (Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines). He also helped set up an archival repository, Malaysian Art Archive and Research Support. He is best remembered for his Bujang Berani sculpture, which clinched the coveted Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition in 1991, at a time when most Malay artists were gravitating towards works with Islamic nuances. 1991 proved a banner year for him, for he also won a Special Award in the One World – No War competition organised by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall. In 1992, he won the Minor Award in the 1991-1992 Salon Malaysia, and he also won Honorable Mentions twice in the Malaysian stage of the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards in 1994 and 1995. The highest price fetched in the Henry Butcher Art Auction was RM60,500 in June 2011. 120 x 98cm

          Est: RM7,000 - RM12,000

In January this year, Bayu Utomo Radjikin, the creative force and spokesman of the cult Matahati group, stunned the local art scene with some 17 highly matured and structured works (although they appear formless and ephemeral) in two monochromes, red and white, hosted by the G13 Gallery. It recalled his first and only dedicated-abstract exhibition simply titled ‘Bayu Utomo Radjikin’ at the now defunct GaleriWan, then at its Bangsar outlet in Kuala Lumpur. It’s like a 20-year itch. The works then were more spontaneous, wild and unrestrained colour palette. And as can be seen in this particular work, a mesh of calligraphic strokes that could amount to some kind of form, a face or landscape perhaps. What is most dynamic about the artist is that he went on to establish the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award as a collaboration between his gallery, HOM Art Trend and Galeri Chandan, apart from regional art initiatives in art residencies and the Art Triangle bringing together outstanding young artsts from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Bayu graduated with a BFA in Universiti ITM in 1991.
