Provenance: Ewbank's, 26 March 1998, lot 374; Private collection Arthur Rackham RWS (19 September 1867 – 6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator. He is recognised as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolour, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Rackham's 51 colour pieces for the early American tale Rip Van Winkle became a turning point in the production of books since – through colour-separated printing – it featured the accurate reproduction of colour artwork. His best-known works also include the illustrations for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm.

Provenance: Mrs. Lucy Stephens, artist and fellow resident of Primrose Hill Studios (according to a typed label on the frame verso. This picture was obtained from her descendant). An unpublished allegory of springtime. Notes on the verso give it the title “Spring” and include the address of Primrose Hill Studios where Rackham lived from 1905-1906 and where he later leased studio space. Born in London, Arthur Rackham took an interest in illustration early on. He studied at the Lambeth School of Art. He began working as an illustrator and reporter for The Westminster Budget in 1892, and by 1893, he was already finding work illustrating books. Arthur Rackham illustrated over ninety books in his lifetime, primarily classics and fairy tales. In his illustrations, Rackham sought to combine elements from works by Northern Renaissance artists he revered like Albrecht Dürer and Albrecht Altdorfer as well as popular contemporary motifs like that of the Art Nouveau movement. Among his other famous book illustrations are Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm (1900), Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906), Alice in Wonderland (1907) and The Romance of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table (1917). He won awards at expositions in Milan and Barcelona in his lieftime, and his imaginative works were even exhibited at the Louvre in 1914.

ARTHUR RACKHAM "Some beautiful young women sat twining wreaths of flowers."

          Est: $15,000 - $20,000

ARTHUR RACKHAM "Some beautiful young women sat twining wreaths of flowers." Illustration published on page 111 in "The Three Golden Apples" of A Wonder Book by Nathaniel Hawthorne (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1922). Watercolor, pen, and ink over graphite on board. 279x406 mm; 11x16 inches. Matted and framed to 25x19 3/4 inches. Signed and dated "A Rackham 14" in lower left corner. Hawthorne's A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys is a collection of six stories within a story in which Eustace Bright, a Williams College student, recounts the legends to a group of children. The tales are modernized versions of ancient Greek myths. "The Three Golden Apples" is the retelling of Hercules' search for three golden apples that grew in the garden of the Hesperides. The "beautiful young women" in the story refer to the Hesperides, the nymphs of the evening and sunsets. Their days are spent singing and guarding the golden apple tree in Queen Hera's apple orchard. The published illustration comprised of four figures; it appears the fourth was later painted over. Provenance: A present from Katherine Miller to her daughter Mable 'Polly' Miller on her 11th birthday in 1938. Has remained in the family until now. From verso: "11th bday - May 1938. The Three Beautiful Maidens twining wreaths - whom Hercules met while on a journey looking for the three golden apples in the garden of Hesperides. (Originally a 4th maiden - later painted out.)"

ARTHUR RACKHAM "Sigfried sees himself in the stream."

          Est: $12,000 - $18,000

ARTHUR RACKHAM "Sigfried sees himself in the stream." Illustration published in Sigfried and The Twilight of the Gods by Richard Wagner, translated by Margaret Armour (London: William Heinemann; New York: Doubleday Page & Co., 1911). Watercolor, pen, and ink over graphite on board. 279x406 mm; 11x16 inches. Matted to 25x19 3/4 inches. Signed and dated "A Rackham 14" in lower left image. Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods are the final two operas of Wagner's four-opera cycle, collectively called "Der Ring des Nibelungen" ("The Ring of the Nibelung"). Inspired by the legends of Norse mythology, the work follows an epic story that chronicles the struggles of gods, heroes and mythical creatures. Rackham created thirty illustrations for Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods, and is widely considered Rackham's most impressive work. This work is a good example of the artist's haunting aesthetic, through his use of subdued colors and fine lines. Provenance: A present from Katherine Miller to her daughter Mable 'Polly' Miller on her 11th birthday in 1938. Has remained in the family until now.

Included in Book of Pictures 1913 and Once Upon a Time. Frame needs repair. Biography from the Archives of askART: The pre-eminent illustrator of the Edwardian Age, whose imaginative work graces such children's classics as Alice in Wonderland, Grimm's Fairytales, and many others, he was born on September 19, 1867, in London, England, as one of twelve children. A student at the City of London School, Arthur became known for his artistic gift, winning many prizes for his artwork. While he began working as a clerk at the Westminster Fire Office at age 18, he continued his art studies at the Lambeth School of Art in his spare time, and submitted some illustrations to publications like Scraps and Chums. In 1892, Rackham left his safe position as a clerk to explore a career in illustration, and worked as a reporter at the Westminster Budget to earn a living. First book illustrations followed (1893), but it wasn't until 1896, the publication of the book The Zankiwank and the Bletherwitch, that his work began showing hints of the whimsical, magical style, later to become his hallmark. Rackham illustrated close to twenty books in the 1890s, also creating images for major children's magazines. There were adventure and fantasy books, fairytales and legends, as well as books on English gardens, and fishing and hunting. In 1905, when a new edition of the Washington Irving classic Rip van Winkle was published, it contained 51 color plates by Rackham, his first major book, by far, and the manifestation of his style. He went on to create much acclaimed illustrations for books like Peter Pan in Kensington Garden (1906), Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1907), A Midsummer-Night's Dream (1908), Undine (1910), The Rhinegold and the Valkyrie, and Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods (1910, 1911). A master in the use of watercolor, Rackham was a skilled draftsman and a gifted and imaginative observer of human nature. "He was-and remains-a soloist in front of an orchestra, a player with the responsibility to interpret and add a personal lustre to great works with variations of infinite sublety and grace." (Arthur Rackham: A Life with Illustration, by James Hamilton, Pavilion Books, London, 1990). He was an elected member of the Royal Watercolor Society, the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, and Master of the Art Worker's Guild. In 1906, he won a gold medal for his work in Milan, Italy, and in Barcelona, Spain, in 1911. His illustrations are known and collected around the world. Arthur Rackham died in England in 1939.
