            Feb. 21, 2023

Robert Race, b.1943, Fifteen Leaf PTO, painted cane, painted wood, nylon thread, cotton, approx. 112

            Est: £50 - £80

Robert Race, b.1943, Fifteen Leaf PTO, painted cane, painted wood, nylon thread, cotton, approx. 112.5cm high, 67cm wide (a/f) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: The autumn leaves fall down the nylon strings under their own momentum. The framework can then be inverted so that they do it again. Performance depends on tension both of the nylon and of the cotton holding the framework. Race did not make many more, if any, of this design because of its delicacy. He tested it for a year because the nylon tends to silt up and needs frequent cleaning. Provenance: Purchased, Robert Race, December 1994. Exhibited ‘That’s the way to do it: Moving toys and Automata by Robert Race’, Quaker Gallery 21 November to 10 December 1994. Note: Robert Race, b.1943, exhibits his moving toys, automata, and kinetic sculpture in Britain and internationally. He is a member and past Chairman of the British Toymakers Guild. His work often incorporates a wide range of natural, re-used, and recycled material to make objects which move in simple but interesting ways. Est: £120 - £180

Robert Race, b. 1943, Game of Catch, a hand-operated automaton, painted wood, driftwood, board, wire, feathers, approx. 20cm high excluding feathers, 50cm wide, 18.5cm deep; together with another by the same artist, Granny at the Fair, painted wood, plywood, wire rod, metal, bearing label to underside printed FROM THE KRISTIN BAYBARS COLLECTION, 7 Mansfield Road, Gospel Oak Village, London, NW3 2JD, 33.5cm high, 25.5cm wide, 5cm deep (2) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Game of Catch: The General and the Admiral catch the beach ball in turn. Maybe the game is symbolic of the services passing the buck, or perhaps the ball represents the margin between land and sea. Anyway, they never fumble, the wire rod swinging the ball from open arms to open arms. The rod that holds the ball is propelled by a wooden springboard activated by the bend in the turning rotating piece of driftwood. Granny at the Fair: Held by the coattails and then sharply let go, Granny hammers the pivoted platform of the ball and sends it up the rod to chime the bell. Her bedroom slippers remain unmoved. Provenance: Game of Catch: Purchased, Robert Race, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, March 1993. Granny at the Fair: Purchased, Kristin Baybars at British Toymakers Guild, May 1992. Est: £120 - £180

Robert Race, b. 1943, Scottish Dancer, a hand-operated automaton, wood, painted wood, driftwood, wire, cotton, feather, approx. 25.5cm high excluding feather, 39cm wide, 14cm deep; together with another by the same artist, The Pirate Skipper, a hand-operated automaton, painted wood, driftwood, wire, cord, painted The Pirate Skipper to front of base, approx. 27.5cm high, 28.5cm wide, 12cm deep (a/f) (2) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Scottish Dancer: The kilted skeleton is an agile dancer despite being dead, his footwork very similar to frenzied Scottish dancers, and he stands after dancing in a range of poses, sometimes drooping with exhaustion, sometimes in the most elegant of poses with one foot behind the other. Robert Race is a master of animated movement. In this case the movement is created by a square cam on the drive shaft jerkily turning the top section of the dead tree so that the cotton attached to each side of the dancer jerks it into dancing. It is rare to meet such an exuberant skeleton, but then he is Scottish. The Pirate Skipper: The skipping rope rotates with the pirate’s arms and the pirate never trips. The pirate can do forward and reverse swings of the skipping rope and makes quite a clatter when his legs touch down. The parrot remains settled throughout and says nothing. Provenance: Scottish Dancer: Purchased, Robert Race, June 1993. The Pirate Skipper: Purchased, Robert Race, exhibition ‘Robert Race: Moving Toys and Automata’, Quaker Gallery, London WC2, January 1994. Est: £100 - £150

Robert Race, b. 1943, Mr Punch and the Baby, painted wood, wire, cord, string, cotton, stones, approx. 49cm high, 35.6cm wide, 8cm deep Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Pulling the cord at the base causes Mr Punch to throw his baby Punch from one hand to the other. He turns his head to watch the baby’s progress from left to right and back again. The baby is tossed by a wire lever, the stones are counterbalancing the arms and make for a smooth catch. The booth mimics traditional Punch and Judy booths. Provenance: Purchased, Robert Race, exhibition ‘That’s the way to do it: Moving toys and automata by Robert Race’, Quaker Gallery 21 November to 10 December 1994. Robert Race, b. 1943, A Quiet Night on Cley Hill (No Flying Saucers), a hand-operated automaton, wood, driftwood, painted wood, wire, painted A Quiet Night on Cley Hill to front and inscribed to underside in pencil A quiet night on cley Hill (No Flying Saucers), and signed and dated 1999, approx. 39cm high, 27cm wide, 29.5cm wide; together with another by the same artist, Insect Watcher, a hand-operated automaton, wood, driftwood, wire, feathers, unsigned, approx. 24cm high, 15cm wide, 7.8cm deep (2) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Insect Watcher: The man’s head moves round as he watches the insect (perhaps a mosquito?) intently in its flight above him. The simple cam movement ensures that the movement of the head is erratic. Provenance: Insect Watcher: Purchased, Robert Race, July 1999. Est: £150 - £250

Robert Race, b. 1943, What we Saw on Yonder Hill, a wall mounted hand-operated automaton, wood, plywood, driftwood, brass, iron, nails, paint, titled What we Saw on Yonder Hill¸ signed and dated 1997 to reverse, the front marked USHERS, 7-55, and with oval trademark for YONDER HILL SAW MILLS CHARD JUNCTION & LONDON, approx. 22cm high, 35cm wide, 17.5cm deep; together with two other hand-operated automata by the same artist, comprising: Jumping Watchdogs, wood, painted wood, coloured cord, approx. 14cm high, 33cm wide, 18.5cm deep; and Three Men in a Box, wood, painted wood and plywood, painted Three men in a box to front of base, approx. 11.5cm high, 16cm wide, 9.5cm deep (3) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: What we Saw on Yonder Hill: The two dancers are mounted on levers and move in a circular tango-like motion, their heads protruding from the top, their hands from the sides and their feet from the bottom, as they pursue their ordered routine. The title of the piece derives from the impress of the sawmill that made the Ushers’ beer crate forming the front. Jumping Watchdogs: A blow on the coloured knob send the watchdog leaping forward, another brings him back into a crouching position. The three dogs are not quite apocalyptic, but they have sharp teeth. Three men in a box: The three levers, which can be pressed one at a time or in pairs or all together, raise Jerome K. Jerome’s ‘Three Men in a Boat’, all dressed in boating costume and adorned with period moustaches. The wood looks suspiciously like teak, a wood much used in boatbuilding. Provenance: What we Saw on Yonder Hill: Purchased, Hitchcocks, Bath, May 1997. Jumping Watchdogs: Purchased, Robert Race, Bradford on Avon, March 1993. Three men in a box: Purchased, Museum of Naïve Art, Bath, November 1991. Robert Race, b. 1943, Gymnast on bars, 1991, wood, painted wood, label for Robert Race to underside,

            Est: £80 - £120

Robert Race, b. 1943, Gymnast on bars, 1991, wood, painted wood, label for Robert Race to underside, approx. 18.5cm high max, 25.7cm wide, 7.1cm deep; together with seven other pieces by the same artist, to include: Acrobat Pirate (Trapeze Torsion), wood, cord, bearing label for Robert Race to underside, approx. 38cm high, 9.5cm wide; three other trapeze torsion toys; Acrobat Admiral, wood bamboo, painted plywood, cord, sleeve toy, approx. 45cm high, another similar sleeve toy, Acrobat Sailor, 45cm high; and Acrobat, painted plywood, cord, approx. 27cm high (8) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: The Gymnast: The gymnast is an elderly City gent, who appears elsewise in Race’s work, with bald head and moustache. He is wearing a striped full-length swimsuit in keeping with his years. He somersaults along the parallel bars in a serene motion and in either direction before his rolling pole reaches the notches at each end. Acrobat Pirate: The acrobat’s arms and legs are fitted loosely on bolts than run through the body. When the two dowels are squeezed together at the bottom and then relaxed the acrobat somersaults and swings as the twisted double cord which runs through his hands untwists and twists and can be held steady in various positions. Robert Race made trapeze acrobats with various characters. This pirate figure has a wooden peg leg. His arms are tattooed ‘Mum’ with a snake and ‘Tina’ with an anchor. Acrobat Admiral: The Admiral performs gymnastics on top of the long pole, presumably a spare spar from his Flagship Man o’ War without his hat falling off. The long dowel is attached to his hands by swivel, the bamboo sleeve by cord to his feet. Pushing the sleeve upwards first turns him over the top so that he is hanging upside down on the other side of the pole, then raises his feet so that he is standing on his head on top of the pole. It is all a remarkable feat for a flag officer. There is no historical or fictional record of a flag officer doing it, not even Hornblower. Provenance: Gymnast on Bars, Acrobat Pirate, Acrobat Admiral, and Sailor: Purchased, Museum of Naïve Art, Bath, November 1991. Acrobat - painted plywood: Purchased, Robert Race, British Toymakers Guild, Kensington, January 1992. Robert Race, b. 1943, Jumping Puffin and Jumping Blackbird, both wood, plain and painted bamboo, feathers, approx. 49.5cm high puffin, 50cm high Blackbird; together with Crocodile Flapper, painted wood, silk cord, approx. 20cm long; and various toys, experimental prototypes, invitation pieces and gifts by the same artist, including: Whirly Fish, wood, painted plastic, plastic, paper cotton, approx. 27cm wide; Invitation autumn oak leaf, coloured wood, cotton, the leaf inscribed Robert Race Moving toys & Automata Quaker Gallery and on reverse Preview Mon 3rd Jan 6.00-8.0 pm Please come, approx. 9cm wide; and Reindeer, wood string, pins, coloured paper, inscribed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2010 with Best wishes from Robert & Thalia, approx. 22.5cm wide (lot) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Jumping Puffin and Jumping Blackbird: The puffin, being a short piece of bamboo leaps up the twig as the springy bamboo lever is lowered and released. To reach the top would be too ambitious. The same for Jumping Blackbird. Whirly Fish: The whirly fish is one of a number of toys of its type designed and made by Robert Race. Its teeth and fin give it a shark-like look. The shaft through the body with its paper propeller at the rear revolves as the fish is whirled on the end of the cotton thread attached to a 39cm painted wooden stick. This whirly fish and No.506 were experimental prototypes. The fish’s body is made from a yoghurt bottle. Invitation autumn oak leaf: This was Robert Race’s invitation to an exhibition of his work at the Quaker Gallery in 1994. Although not a toy in itself it is a neat bauble with the characteristics of a plaything. The leaf inscribed ‘Robert Race Moving toys & Automata Quaker Gallery’ and on reverse ‘Preview Mon 3rd Jan 6.00-8.0 pm Please come’. Reindeer: For many years Robert Race and his wife Thalia have sent Christmas and New Year greetings to their friends in the form of small toys made by him. This is the 2010/11 greeting. Shaking the rod causes the reindeer to leap forwards and settle backwards as if it is making a real effort to run. Provenance: Jumping Puffin and Jumping Blackbird: Purchased, Robert Race, British Toymakers’ Guild Fair, Kensington, January 1992. Crocodile Flapper: Purchased, Robert Race, December 1992. Whirly Fish: Purchased, Robert Race, December 1992. Invitation autumn leaf: Sent by Robert Race, December 1994. Reindeer: Gift from Robert and Thalia Race, Dec 2009. Robert Race, b. 1943, Worm Time, a hand-operated automaton, driftwood, metal mesh (rusty), wire, cot

            Est: £150 - £250

Robert Race, b. 1943, Worm Time, a hand-operated automaton, driftwood, metal mesh (rusty), wire, cotton, stone, signed and dated 1996, approx. 28.8cm high, 34cm wide, 6.1cm deep; together with six other pieces by the same artist, to include: Flying Owl Robert Race, driftwood, feathers, cotton, stone, with wall mount, approx. 17.5cm excluding feathers, 170cm high max; and Blackbird and Wasp, wood, wire, feathers, signed and dated 1996, approx. 19.5cm high, 22cm wide, 2.5cm wide; and four others (7) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Worm Time: The bird feeds a rusty wire worm to her young on the metal mesh nest. She dips towards the chick who opens his mouth wide in hopes of a juicy meal. This is a typical work of Robert Race, with its imaginative use of pieces of driftwood (his favourite collection ground is Chesil Bank) and its simplicity of movement. Pressing the lever raises the dowel supporting the chick’s head, turning it sideways to receive the worm as a pin follows a slanted groove at the bottom of the sleeve of the neck. Cotton attached to the back of the chick’s upper beak tautens as the head is raised and opens the beak wide. At the same time the lever relaxes the cotton attached at one end to the mother and at the other to the stone weight, so that the mother dips her head with the worm towards the chick. The stone weight restores the actors to the start when the lever is released. The name ‘Worm Time’ arose in conversation with Race. Flying Owl: The owl flies downwards (only downwards), pulling the stone weight upwards. His wigs whirr round in a frenzy of flight. When he reaches the stone at the bottom, he can be pulled up again, by pulling the stone downwards, to the pulley wheel in order to start again. Blackbird and Wasp: The blackbird to lunges with open beak as the wasp flies within eating distance when the lever is pressed down, but (as is usual with automata of this type) the bird doesn’t catch the wasp and can have another go. Provenance: Flying Owl: Purchased, Robert Race, Robert Race, exhibition ‘That’s the way to do it: Moving toys and automata by Robert Race’, Quaker Gallery 21 November to 10 December 1994, December 1994. Worm Time: Purchased, Robert Race, October 1996. Blackbird and Wasp: Robert Race, October 1996. Exhibited, ‘A Collector’s Collection’, Strawberry Hill, June-November 2014. Robert Race, b. 1943, Farmer’s Wife, a hand-operated automaton, wood, painted wood, acorn cup, cotto

            Est: £100 - £150

Robert Race, b. 1943, Farmer’s Wife, a hand-operated automaton, wood, painted wood, acorn cup, cotton thread, approx. 20cm high, 27cm wide, 10cm deep; together with a collection of automata by the same artist, to include: Pecking Bureaucrats, pendulum toy, wood, painted wood and plywood, cotton, stone, feathers, approx. 8.5cm excluding feathers, string and stone, 36.5cm wide, 1.8cm deep; Walking Bureaucrat, push toy, painted wood and plywood, metal pin and washers, feather, approx. 58cm high, 16cm wide; Ice Cream Couple, lever toy, wood, painted wood, painted plywood, approx. 9.4cm high, 23.1cm wide; and other lever toys and pendulum toys (9) Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Farmer’s Wife: A cockerel and three hens peck at the grain that the farmer’s wife is scattering from her bowl as she turns round. Ingeniously the hens’ necks are attached in pairs to the small weight underneath and peck when the weight is displaced by a turning flange, while the wife is turned by friction on a contrate wheel. Pecking Bureaucrats: The two bureaucrats, their noses like beaks, their arms stowed like closed wings, their bald heads with feather crests, eagerly peck in turn at the ground, as the stone underneath is swung, tightening and relaxing the cotton attached to base of the neck of each bird, pulling the neck and head up when tight and letting it drop when relaxed. This is a variant of the traditional pecking pendulum toy, usually with hens, made all over the world. Robert Race used the bureaucrat theme in other forms, see Walking Bureaucrat push toy. Walking Bureaucrat: This is one of several toys by Robert Race on the theme of the bureaucrat, which he has also shown as a crested bird in pendulum toys, and as an un-crested acrobat. In this case, as with the other avian figures, the arms are like folded wings and the rotating legs give a passing impression of a busy small bird’s waddle. Provenance: Farmer’s Wife: Purchased, Robert Race, exhibition ‘Robert Race: Moving Toys an Automata’, Quaker Gallery, London, January 1994. Pecking Bureaucrats: Purchased, Museum of Naïve Art, Bath, May 1991. Walking Bureaucrats: Gift, 1994. Ice Cream Couple: Purchased, Robert Race, May 1992. As the wheel turns, the figures tip over under the weight of their bodies before righting themselves as they again reach the top of the wheel. Nothing stops them from waving the two flags that each figure is brandishing. This is another example of Race’s use of waste materials. Provenance: Purchased, Black Swan Ltd, Somerset, May 2006. Est: £300 - £500

Robert Race, b. 1943, Chesil String, a hand-wound automaton, wood, driftwood, sea string, metal, 72cm high, 70cm wide, 12cm deep Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: this pyramid of figures brandishing torches or brooms looks the sort of fantasy that you might imagine rising from the waves as you sail an ancient sea, but the figures are hardly from the Classical world. They come from a rougher Northern tradition. At the top is a female figure (not Neptune as you might expect) with long string hair and two torches, then two male figures with one torch each and fierce eyebrows and moustaches, then two more females, two males with naturally shaped weapons and two mermaids. The movements are created by strings attached to eccentrically mounted block cams at the base which pull on the strings at different times. All nine figures wave their arms, and the mermaids fish-like bodies undulate as their separate sections rise and fall. On the base two sea birds rotate as if they are floating on whirlpools. The whole scene is typical of Races imaginative use of materials picked up from Chesil Bank, and the sea nymphs and their companions are enjoying themselves. Robert Race, b. 1943, Danse Macabre, a hand-operated automaton, driftwood, wood, fishing cork, tinplate, wire, feathers, faceted reflection sphere, wire rod, string, 91cm high, 61cm diameter Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: Winding the handle produces a frenzy of dance, as the wire-boned skeleton dancers are whirled round on the string-driven central column, each couple also whirling in their waltz. It isnt quite as beautiful as you see in the costume films of the 18-19th century, but the costume films dont cast skeletons in their waltzes. Robert Race, b. 1943, Its a Ducks Life, a hand-wound automaton, wood, driftwood, coloured wood, wire rod, feather, 32cm high, 57cm wide, 10cm deep Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: The ducks, or rather duck and five ducklings, sway from side to side as if waddling forward. The duckling below revolves while a lever presses on a plastic quacking concertina set in the base. Three of the ducklings appear to have lost the feathers from their tails. Perhaps the fox nearly got them. Provenance: Purchased, Robert Race exhibition Thats the way to do it: Moving toys and automata by Robert Race, Quaker Gallery, 21 November - 10 December 1994. Est: £300 - £500

Robert Race, b. 1943, Spring Time, a hand-operated automaton, driftwood, woods, bamboo, iron, feathers, 68cm high, 56cm wide, 30cm deep Sir Nicholas Goodison noted: the landscape in which the four puffins are sporting themselves, with its rusty iron industrial fragments, isnt spring-like; but the spring is in the puffins steps as the projecting levers attached to the rotating piece of driftwood in turn trigger the bamboo springs that hold each puffin. The effect is to shoot the puffins in turn up the stems that they are attached to. They achieve different heights but tests have not been carried out to establish a relationship between vigour in turning the handle and the height achieved.
